Up to 220,000 disabled people will have to 'wait ALL SUMMER for benefit payments'
Liverpool-born Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey said the first of those back payments will only come "at the end of the summer"

Up to 220,000 disabled people will have to wait ALL summer for benefit payments they deserve - according to Esther McVey.

Mentally ill people face having to last through the school holidays without extra Personal Independence Payments (PIP), despite winning the right to them in the High Court.

The claimants are set to get a higher rate of PIP after the High Court said rules for assessing them were "blatantly discriminatory".

Staff are currently assessing all 1.6million PIP claims, and up to 220,000 people will get extra money backdated to November 2016.

But updating MPs in the Commons yesterday, Scouse Work and Pensions Secretary Ms McVey said the first of those back payments will only come "at the end of the summer".

This has just been on R4 Moneybox. One guy finally got his entitlement after a year but now has to wait until the DWP can provide the guidance before he can receive the money. Even the presenter asked whether there are delaying tactics being used. I didn't catch the name of the Baroness but surely this is the sort of thing which having a house of Lords should be for dealing with - absolute basic human needs something she was very clearly aware of. Strange that isn't it because I recall when they did step in over Osborne's reform of WTCs due to how much it could affect people. The complexity of the system came up yet again. In turn I again say that as PiP then UC was supposed to resolve this then they are miserably failing with no improvement on the verge of completion at which previous benefit structures and the admin staff to process will no doubt have been swiftly removed (in a trimmed down cheap as chips online only application process) and we'll probably be at a point of no return. I prefer to describe it as the govt simply loving what they are doing to people and playing games with lives otherwise this apparently oh so fair establishment would recognise a concept known as human rights and stop giving the go ahead for white elephants like HS2 and extra runways that will only benefit a tiny proportion of the population. Austere government by big toenail.
