Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, Margaret Greenwood MP, has vowed that the next Labour Government “will scrap the Tories’ punitive sanctions regime in its entirety”.

Speaking at the Party’s annual conference in Manchester, Margaret Greenwood said the “heartless sanctions regime” has led to increased ill health and destitution for many of the UK’s poorest people.

She said that punishing vulnerable people “just because they missed the bus on the way to the Jobcentre or even because they attended a job interview” can have a devastating impact on benefit claimants and their families.

“The average sanction is the loss of one month’s money … and a sanction can be as long as three years”, she said.

“Any one of us could find ourselves on the receiving end of their callous regime. Because of course any one of us could be made redundant, become ill, experience relationship breakdown or find ourselves caring for a loved one.

Lets hope if they get in again they reverse it then. If that WAS to happen, it would mean that claimants would be able to go to a job centre without fear of ANY sanction and this may (MAY) bring about a level playing field between claimant and work coach. Sanctions are put in place against countries who don`t stay in line with NATO or go against UN policy or for humanitarian outrages. Claimants don`t commit such crimes, yet we are the ones punished with the same mentality just for not having a job and having t comply with an atmosphere of fear.

Agree archangel. Blair and Brown did nothing for people expect start unjust wars and brought in that New Deal. And not forgetting they also changed the way people claiming ESA and PIP were assessed medically. The Tories just carried on with their legacy and now it`s even worse.
