The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has released the figures for its latest round of yearly bonuses. If you’re a claimant, or anyone affected by Esther McVey’s department, it’s grim reading.
The DWP: it has form

DWP staff have both monthly bonuses (referred to here as “in-year”) and an end-of-year one. It breaks them down into bonuses for “delegated pay grade” (regular staff) and “senior civil servants”.

As The Canary previously reported, for 2016/17, the DWP’s total bonus bill was just shy of £43m – almost £1.7m higher than it previously reported. But with estimated staff gifts, The Canary makes this figure £47.2m. This included for regular staff:

£5.3m of in-year bonuses to 11.5% of its staff. This is a median bonus of £100 each.
£36.9m in end-of-year bonuses to nearly 92% of its staff. This is a median bonus of £500 each.

It also gave out 113,133 gift vouchers to staff, with a total of median values of £4.24m (a Canary estimate).

But now, the DWP has released its end-of-year estimated bonus figure for 2017/18.
Rewarding failure

It shows staff will be sharing around a £36m bonus pot this year. The total figure (£36.4m) does include the in-year bonuses for August; for 2016/17, these amounts were on average around £440,000. So it’s safe to say that around £36m will be the end-of-year bonus figures.

I don’t know how anyone with any conscience could work for the DWP—its like the modern equivalent of the Gestapo. Maybe the staff have been so brainwashed that they have fallen for all of McVey’s propaganda, and think that what they are doing is good. If so they are more stupid than I thought they were.

The alternative is that they are children of Satan.

I`m sure some coaches thrive on the adrenaline kick of their job but I also feel there are a `few` in there who will make a moral decision to listen to their own consciences, but can`t totally fall foul of their `guidelines` or training. We all know about the whistleblowers who have shown what a nasty system UC is and why they struggled to maintain their positions when they were shackled by restrictions. Helping people is not their main task, it`s wholly to push a mandate on controlling people and stop them from being inactive.

I met a woman in my job centre a few years ago when I went in with a fit note. She duly called me over and couldn`t have been nicer. I thought I`d walked into the wrong office! Sadly, I didn`t meet here again but it was one of those chance meetings that don`t come along all that much! Such a shame really when things could be like this much of the time and the whole atmosphere could be so much better.

Yes me too! Show these bastards no fear and bring on to them as bad as what they try to do to you

Because we are all an unwanted statistic they develop a hostile atmosphere hoping many will just crack and sign off.

Security guards walk around the place as if they are bouncers from some london night club,i just look at them and smile. One asked what was i smiling at ? I said you!
he then replied why?I said cos you remind me of someone and asked again who? i said best i dont tell you that cos i was going to reply a dickhead.

Then we have similar scenarios being played out at 'provider' type companies, only difference there is they all walk around with badges of honour and 1 pint coffee cups thinking their 'working'at the LSE

Absolutely. It`s easy to say to people `be prepared` for each meeting and it`s something we could all take on board. Try to ignore the hostile environment and concentrate on your paperwork on the day, get across some questions that YOU want answered (prepare these in advance of your meeting) and try to show that what you have done within those few weeks since your last visit have been positive, but also don`t be afraid to mention the negatives if you have any. Point out your frustrations but that you overcome them by puting them behind you and moving on. Don`t allow negativity to take over the conversation. I sometimes ask a coach directly how I might apply something or word something. It`s all about showing your very much involved with their ideology, but on your terms!
