The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) was recently forced to reveal that over 10,000 Employment and Support (ESA) claimants had died in three years. Now, the admission has been slammed by both Labour and SNP politicians.
The DWP: thousands dead

In August, as Welfare Weekly first reported then The Canary expanded on, the DWP was responding to a Freedom of Information request (FOI) from campaigner Gail Ward. She asked how many people on ESA and two other benefits had died between 2014 and 2017.

Many will have had exacerbations of stress and anxiety along with a worsening of their mental state just due to the assessments and then being told they don`t qualify for the benefit any longer. DWP will deny all liability of course.

Yes comply, DWP will just say that they make their decisions to boot someone off ESA asap based on Maximus (not forgetting atos before them) reports written by a nurse and Maximus will just say that it is not them who make the decision. Neither accept ultimate responsibility for something which doesn't involve anybody else other than the claimant and are therefore, jointly guilty of negligence. Government handed responsibility to a third party of underqualified healthcare professionals who carry out the government's dirty work to meet precious targets often turning up in jeans and jumpers for which they would be disciplined if working in a hospital.

The question remains: why not leave these decisions to the people in the NHS who are best qualified to do so and would carry out as part of their duties at no extra cost to the tax payer?

The new Scottish Social Security system sadly doesn`t include ESA (yet) but I long for the day when it does. However, there still isn`t enough clarity about actually WHO will be responsible for such assessments and how different they will differ from private outsourcing now. If they are to be handed back into NHS hands all good, but I met with a physiotherapist in the NHS who preceded to interview me with the same tact as an ATOS assessor and the whole meeting put me off going back again. Not what we want from a compassionate NHS when they send us to people who tell us we need to stop allowing pain preventing us from actively doing things. Then I realised that physiotherapists don`t truly understand chronic pain. Something that was backed up by the pain associating members.
