One woman said she knows of three people who have been left suicidal as a result of the new DWP system

Dozens of protesters lined the streets of Guisborough to protest against the roll-out of a new benefits payment system.

Cries of "No ifs, no buts, no Universal Credit cuts" filled the air as the group marched along the high street carrying placards on Saturday morning.

The launch of Universal Credit has been met with widespread opposition, with Redcar MP Anna Turley warning it "is going to be devastating for people in our area".

Around 50 people took part in the protest, which was followed by speeches at Prior Pursglove College.

The new system replaces six other benefits with a single monthly payment.

But it has attracted criticism. Lauren Dingsdale, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland said it's "making people have to choose between eating and heating".

She added: “The botched roll-out of Universal Credit has placed thousands of working people across the country into poverty and into debt."

Teesside Live spoke to some of the people taking part in the march.

What bothers me the most is, a government are put in place to make sure their citizens are never hungry or placed at risk of harm. Yet here we have the Tories hell bent on implementing a `test & learn` approach on REAL people, knowing the harm it has and IS still causing. This alone should enrage even the better off in society watching on from their ivory towers until we gain enough momentum to vote down their dictatorship altogether.

Universal Credit is a population control tool and not just a "new system replacing six other benefits with a single monthly payment." It`s much, MUCH more than just puting all these tools in one basket. Might be seen as only that by those who have never relied on any benefits but soon will. Wake up people.

Just a reminder of the sort of Christmas cheer the DWP will be delivering:

"We're reducing your Universal Credit by £10.40 each day. This is called a sanction.

We're giving you a low level sanction because you failed to attend a telephone commitment review appointment on 02/8/18 at 9.20am

We looked at all the information, including anything you told us, and don't think you have a good reason for this.

Your sanction started on 02 August 2018 and will last 110 days.

We'll also add 7 days because this is your first low-level sanction in the first 12 months."

The use of the word "attend" seems very strange to me. I understand that claimants are required to attend meetings on a particular date and at a particular time and in a particular place decided by the SoS, but can they be required to "attend" over the telephone? Did the victim simply fail to answer a telephone call?

A person sanctioned like this may lose his home. If he loses all his benefit bar housing benefit, then he may spend his housing benefit on food to survive.
