Lisa Brown says 'Christmas is cancelled' after she was rejected by the new welfare system and left more than £1,000 in debt

A desperate Hall Green grandmother fears she could be left homeless after being denied Universal Credit - because she was born in America.

Lisa Brown, 51, was born in Detroit to Brummie parents who brought her back to the UK at the age of five.

Lisa, a mum-of-five - two with learning difficulties - has lived in the city ever since.

After losing her job as a cook at a social club earlier this year she struggled to meet her rent payments and was forced to apply for Universal Credit.

But the struggling single mum was rejected by the new welfare system and has since racked up more than £1,000 in arrears.

Now she faces being booted out of the home she has lived in for five years, and still shares with two of her children.

She claims she was denied Universal Credit after failing a habitual residence test, which she was made to take due to being born in the US.

As a result, she has been relying on the kindness of family and friends to foot her rent bill - but her debts are snowballing and she fears she could soon be left homeless.

She told BirminghamLive: "I am a Brummie. I may not have been born here but both my parents were.

"I have lived here since the age of five and all my kids were born here.
