Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Jobseekers' Allowance payments have been unexpectedly split for an unknown number of claimants

A suspected technical glitch in the benefits system means families across the country have been getting some of their money early.

The error has paid out both sickness benefit Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Jobseekers' Allowance to people across the country.

Usually, both those benefits are paid in one lump sum fortnightly.

But many claimants who were due to be paid next week have received half their payment already.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) attempted to calm fears today by insisting everyone will get the second half of their payment on the correct day.
