On 5 January, the BBC broadcast Ken Loach’s film, I, Daniel Blake. The film is a gritty and heart-breaking account of the reality of the benefits system in Tory Britain.

As the Canary‘s Fréa Lockley reported, the film was made following six months of research that included visits to jobcentres and foodbanks.

But this apparently wasn’t enough for deputy chair of the Conservative Party, James Cleverly. He took to Twitter to call out the accuracy of the film and to claim it didn’t match his experience. Luckily, Twitter was on hand to give him a dose of reality.

“In my experience”

Cleverly started by calling out Labour MP Rebecca Long-Bailey after she tweeted that people should watch the film to see the “human cost of Tory austerity”:

These individuals don`t live in our world Paul, they are bloody blinkered to it and will never see the real cost. Their `club` never will because they have made it in life. I, Daniel Blake is a masterpiece, well acted and deserved the Bafta it won.

Cleverley actually may have a reasonable point as imho the DWP get off relatively lightly in this film good and accurate though I believe it is in itself with the subject matter covered. It is merely a snapshot of a few people caught up in the current economic mess which currently and for a sustained period of decades affects literally millions of people in reality not called either Daniel or Blake. For a start it is long overdue, the last such relevant work I can recall was Bleasdale's Boys from the Black Stuff (coincidentally (?) focussing on another part of the North East; Middlesborough as was Auf Wiedersehn Pet about a bunch of guys from Sunderland having to go abroad to find work hmmm bit of a pattern there) after which we seem to have become a bit too accepting of unemployment in the UK.

So let's have a follow up warts and all about real existing people and not just fictitious characters based on them, better still a series of films focussing on one major aspect at a time no stone left unturned (telephoning the useless gimps - that's 45 minutes eaten up straight away just trying to get through - gonna be an epic on kurosawa proportions what an individual can do to pass the time waiting on hold especially if they have a serious medical condition affecting them right at that moment, GP and specialists, documents going missing in the post, difficulties getting to the medicals or appeals centres, behaviour of staff including security, attitudes towards people who have worked and paid tax their whole lives and in turn being verbally abused by those lucky enough to still have a job which pays the bills, refused accommodation due to lack of status, evicted for not paying rent on time not forgetting how the decisions are made and justified) and see how he feels with the govt's negligence set out top to bottom, facts, figures job lot, protests outside Atos itself and how any such complaint, protest or even UN account of the shambolic benefits system paid for out of hardworking people's wages persistently falls on deaf ears as people keep dying. Maybe it is different in Cleverley's area so a regional account might prove useful seeing as the north east was one of those forgotten about by his party many many years ago that this senior politician seems to find it so difficult to identify with its long standing economic difficulties.

Agree. What we need here is a fly-on- the- wall reality series over say eight weeks (at least) following four different claimants. A single claimant, a single mother and a family. And perhaps someone who is just entering our world of illusion for the first time and trying to claim Universal Credit. Follow each of their journeys and catalog their individual lives for six weeks and the two following weeks afterwards. Trouble is, cameras are not allowed into job centres so it fails in that area, although secret cameras should be used here anyway because if they know they are being filmed, they will act very differently.

When we consider the years that have gone by and compare them to today, being unemployed has stayed static in terms of how people are managed and treated, only Universal Credit will be the controlling factor in all of this and what we are witnessing now may just be the tip of the iceberg.

Indeed remember both series very well, became part of "Auf Wiedersehn Pet" As I worked in Germany during the 80s, Far rougher then shown in the TV show. ;)
