As has become the norm, Christmas number one is once again very un-Christmassy.

The 2018 number one is LadBaby with We Built This City. If You're non the wiser, don't worry, it just means you don't spend all your life on the internet.

LadBaby is the creation of 31-year-old YouTube sensation and dad blogger – real name Mark Hoyle. Mark, his wife Roxanne and two sons recorded their own version of Starship’s 1985 hit as an ode to sausage rolls, rather than rock and roll.

Regardless of what you make of the song, all proceeds from the single go to foodbank charity The Trussell Trust.

The song has shifted 75,000 combined sales this week to take the top spot, and despite a fiercely close race all week, finishes 18,500 ahead of his closest competition after a last-minute push. 93% of his sales were downloads, with the remainder made up from audio and video streams.

We Built This City is also the first novelty song to claim the festive top spot in 18 years, since Bob The Builder’s Can We Fix It? in 2000.

Speaking to Official Charts, Hoyle said: “Thank you everybody in the UK who has got a sausage roll to the top. I can’t thank you enough not only for downloading the song but for raising money for such an incredible charity. I’m honestly speechless and lost for words. Thank you so much. YES MAAATE!”

Good on them for producing a fun song and helping a much needed charitable organisation. I only heard about this a few days ago when it was featured in a news story and watched the clip they showed and found it funny! Not my kind of thing but hey, they have ousted the usual suspects like Ed Sheerin and Rhianna!

I quite enjoyed that although would not want to just listen to it many times - and I reckon that is part of the idea behind it as an appropriate reminder of what a nightmare this year has been for many including those thinking they were lucky to find a job only to find themselves go from the frying pan to the fire. Showing you can still have a laugh or entertain each other is like it was in wartime, and a sausage roll might be all some are gonna get. So hopefully this helps in some way to pull people together a bit more and keeping the usual suspects off is truly a great way to finish the year - I stopped paying attention to the charts somewhere around the late eighties and looked up artists who influenced the bands I listened to and am still doing it now thanks mainly to the internet.

I don`t have the same spirit of Christmas nowadays because I know it`s all about spending money on crap that nobody can afford unless they have money to waste. Most of the population will be feeling guilty today because they have not bought the gifts they wanted to because they are out of reach of their finances and it`s a shame Christmas isn`t more about sending a card and saying we are thinking about someone rather than expecting a parcel rapped in foil that will no doubt be non-recyclable because it too is made from crap.

Those days are gone when we just got a card and a few small, inexpensive things to open. Now it`s designer perfumes, designer clothing and £50 + gift vouchers. I`ve received a few really nice things from a friend of mine that were made by crafters and didn`t cost a lot. The other stuff I didn`t really need or want, but appreciate the thought. Little do they know these other gifts will be recycled into the local PDSA charity shop! B)
