2.4 million over 75s who live on their own could lose the free TV licence in 2020
Welfare Weekly By Welfare Weekly December 20, 2018

New figures produced by the House of Commons Library for the Labour Party show that approximately 2.4 million over 75s who live on their own could lose the free TV licence in 2020.

The BBC has begun a consultation looking at options to reduce or scrap the free TV licence concession for over 75s from 2020 following the Government’s decision to pass the responsibility for funding the concession to the BBC.

This will have a severe impact on the many millions of older people living alone, many of whom rely on their TV for company.

New figures produced by the House of Commons Library have found that in 2020 there will be approximately 2.4 million people aged over 75 living alone.

If free TV licences are scrapped completely, which would save the BBC most money and is an option in the BBC’s consultation, all of these people will lose their free TV licences.

My mum would lose her`s and I benefit from that too as we share the same home so would have to start paying for a licence. The BBC should get into line with the likes of SKY and `pay per view` TV if people want to keep watching the BBC, they will surely pay for it? But if we don`t, we should be able to HAVE a TV without having to pay for a licence to watch it just because the BBC have a stranglehold on people`s freedom to be able to choose?

I think it`s time for the BBC to be seen as all other TV options and they either start bringing in advertising revenue, or start charging to watch their channels as SKy etc, do now and let people CHOOSE. Rather than be TOLD they must pay for a TV licence or be fined.

Given the choices on offer, if I didn`t have to pay an annual licence fee in future, I could use that money to join SKY and get the sports/racing channels on board. As it is, I can`t afford both.

Fully Agree Comply; Being a Liverpool Supporter B) , At one time you just payed SKY and got all the Football, With the Arrival of BT-SPORT, one now has to pay for Both Networks
But I always ring up when my subscriptions are due for renewal and "Do a Deal", As a result got SKY-SPORTS Down from £32 to £16; B) And
BT-SPORTS Down from £27 to £9; All HD of Course B) , I just "Forget" the Licence bit.

One can of Course go down the "Illegal" Route and stream Sport on Line from Pirate Networks B) , But Sites go down without Warning, Legal enforcement is getting stronger and Penalty's severe, And Picture quality is often Dire. :(

But on the Positive side; A singal Live game at Anfield can Cost £60+; so £25 a month for SKY/BT is a Bargain. B)

Totally agree Paul. I could do a SKY broadband/home phone and TV package all in one if it wasn`t for the BBC licence fee messing things up. Although the costs for these all-in-one deals could work out more per annum so I would need to do some careful calculations. Or keep these all separate entities if the costs worked out cheaper. I miss not being able to watch some of the `big` football games because although I don`t avidly follow any particular team, I do enjoy being able to have the choice. As it is, the BBC are making this tough for everyone and yet, the government wash their hands of any interference saying it`s not their problem. Much like they did with RBS.

Its ridiculous you get FREEVIEW tv with the bbc included. The bbc channels are nothing special. The only thing I seem to watch on it is pointless.
The channel should be blurred out and you should have the option to pay to watch it.
Why should we have an extra bill forced on us.
Also how come america can watch bbc America for free.

One of the Problems Catwoman is wide areas of the UK CANNOT get Freeview, No such service in the area I used to live in when in Wales, Reception across Liverpool, varies a lot, So its Cabal or SKY, Or the Free to View SKY Channels, All to do with "Saving Money" for the Government, they dont give a shit about us.

Paul, I heard that SKY have a new horse racing channel started on January 1st but although they say it is `free to view` I`m guessing it`s not `free` at all and you have to be a SKY subscriber? I can only watch ITV racing now (they took over from the brilliant coverage on Channel Four) when their licence came to an end. Was gutted when that happened. ITV have saved the day for racing fans but I miss John Francome, Big Mac and the team on Channel Four racing. :(

Thanks Paul. Thought so. Looks like I`ll have to enjoy ITV for as long as they hold the terrestrial licence for racing and hope one day the BBC will stop this licence fee nonsense which would allow me to afford `pay for` TV.
