Lizzie Nunnery’s play on a woman juggling the figures to survive adds up to a damning indictment of austerity Britain, says PAUL FOLEY

Everyman Theatre, Liverpool

CAREFULLY recording the family’s income and outgoings, Eve Brennan has always been good at sums.
To keep her family on the right side of the poverty line, she’s had to. And she’s done the same for the ailing furniture store where she works, which has teetered on the brink of bankruptcy for years.
But then her world begins to unravel. She’s put on short-time working, her feckless partner’s been sacked, her daughter’s being bullied and her mother is descending into a fog of dementia.
Can Eve keep them all afloat while juggling her rapidly dwindling finances? That’s the burning dilemma at the heart of The Sum, Lizzie Nunnery’s provocative, passionate and beautifully crafted drama.
A political piece that neither preaches nor lectures, this is a true play for today as the reality of working-class life in Tory Britain unfolds. Interspersed with some witty, angry and heartbreaking songs, Nunnery’s work is a powerful voice for working-class communities.
