A study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) indicates that human activity is precipitating “biological annihilation” and a mass extinction event.
The peer-reviewed paper, “Biological annihilation via the ongoing sixth mass extinction signaled by vertebrate population losses and declines,” argues that the severity of the ongoing biodiversity crisis is often underestimated by looking primarily at extinctions (the loss of all individuals in a species). The study looks more broadly at species’ population decline and argues that “Earth’s sixth mass extinction episode has proceeded further than most assume.”
The study was coauthored by Gerardo Ceballos of the Instituto de Ecología at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in Mexico City and by Paul R. Ehrlich and Rodolfo Dirzo of Stanford University’s Department of Biology.
The authors argue that while the extinction rate is already alarmingly high—including at least two vertebrate species per year for the past century—this does not tell the full story. Even if species have not yet gone extinct, their numbers and geographic distribution are decreasing dramatically, signaling an accelerating trend toward eventual extinction.

In theory this is actually correct: the rate of extinction caused by our species environmental modifications, would qualify this period as one of "mass extinction".

One should however put it in the contest of a dying earth, toward the end of its planetary ability to sustain life, we humans, are also, so far at least, the only chance to somehow export life elsewhere...

I preffer to be optomistic about this kind of thing i/m a bit of a SciFi geek and preffer to belive that we can save ourselffs via technology, We allready have the capability to reverse the damage we have done to the planat and change our policys on polution and deforestation ect and work on coexisting with the planet for the long term. But there are alot of things we have to overcome for this this to happen most noteably our aproach to capitalism/consumerisim and the unhealthy practices being perpetrated on the planet in our name
The planet isnt dieing brutus its us who are killing it we just need to stop and perhapse embrace some radical new ideas like Archologies and rebuild society in a more eco friendly way instead of shiting in the water suply and spewing poison in to the air. :(

P.S If your a SciFi geek like me i highly recomend you watch some more of Issac Arthurs videos its like wordy SciFi porn for geeks. :P

I agree, technology and the civilising trend will remedy much of the damage.
However I was referring to the planetary life.
While being a little facetious, I compared the expected lifespan for life for the earth, roughly about five billion, 90% of which has already elapsed.

Nothing to worry about in our human time scale :P .
