The DWP’s Esther McVey is blasted for giving ‘incorrect statements’ to parliament

JUNE 22ND, 2018 Steve Topple

The Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) secretary Esther McVey has been caught giving out “incorrect” and “wrong” information to parliament. But it’s all become a bit personal for one MP, as well.

The DWP: in the dock again
As The Canary previously reported, on 14 June the DWP lost part of a court case over Universal Credit. It centred on the loss of benefits for two claimants when they moved onto Universal Credit. Because this new benefit from the DWP replaces most previous ones, some disabled people with severe impairments could lose out on money. Solicitors Leigh Day argued that the DWP had acted unlawfully by not making up a loss of £178 a month for one claimant specifically, when he changed over from his old benefits to Universal Credit.

And the judge partially agreed.

They ruled that the arrangements for the delivery of Universal Credit for severely disabled people are “discriminatory” and “unlawful” on ground three of the case; that is, that the:

implementation of universal credit and the absence of any ‘top up’ payments for this vulnerable group as compared to others constitutes discrimination contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights [ECHR].

McVey had already changed the rules for people receiving the benefit in question: the Severe Disability Premium (SDP). So people moving onto Universal Credit would have the amount they previously received protected. But the judge still found the DWP to have committed “unlawful discrimination”, historically, before it made the changes. Because McVey only made the changes days before the court judgement. And the DWP denied to John Pring at Disability News Service that the two were connected.

Ester Mcvey hauled before Parliament this morning to apologise for lying to the House while making that statement the other day.

Interesting to see how she is going to wriggle out of this one.

She's expected to be there at around 10.30 am.

Missed that, did she turn up? I heard her grovelling apology yesterday to the house but I can`t believe these ministers are put in such a responsible position and tirelessly read from a script that helps nobody.

You didn't miss much CoD.

It's sickening how she manages, with help and encouragement from the cronies sat behind her, to evade and avoid taking any responsibility for her gross incompetence and lack of understanding of the policies she is supposed to be in charge of and the damage she is causing to lives.

Absolutely. How can she say that report was saying `speed up` UC when it said the opposite? Me thinks she`s done a quick proof read through it and missed the important bits! Then again, maybe she done this thinking there would be no backlash. What we need are an army of people holding these ministers to task and not just allowing them to apologise and wave off their mistakes. Ms McVey and her `team` from the work and pensions need a serious reshuffle. Preferably one that removes them from power altogether.

Quote: "We adopt a Test & Learn approach to UC".....yes, test, meaning we are being `tested` as guinea pigs. They then learn from their mistakes while people fall into dept and poverty as a direct result of their actions. Oh and not forgetting the one week they removed from the waiting times for UC but still maintain the other FOUR weeks before any payment is seen. Some claimants are waiting MUCH longer than this due to the failures within the UC system not being fully recognised.

It would be an appropriate opportunity to test how our govt worked with some accountability. No viable alternatives to UC my foot, with a UBI people would at least be able to pay their rent and eat. The suffering is either premeditated or the result of utter incompetence. NAO needs to concentrate on the results and they don't include the creation of real jobs. While they are at it they can do an evaluation of ministers' pay and the continuing rise of MP's salaries during a period of so called austerity where the debts are still mounting up.

The NAO shouldn't just slink away now with an accepted apology because there will still remain questions that DWP won`t answer, or don`t have the answer. DWP have to be accountable for their actions yet the misery is clear to see no matter how much DWP try to polish a turd.

Agreed they shouldn't just slink away but if they do then I think we should read this as a mere token gesture like much else paying lip service to keep a constant dialogue of largely irrelevent and repetetive spiel aimed at sections of the public who don't have time or inclination to disect information.

Yes, it seems an apology means `discussion now closed` in many respects and we never hear anymore about it.

JULY 11, 2018; McVey should be ‘sanctioned’ for repeatedly misleading MPs over universal credit, says Labour

ESTHER McVile faced cries of “shame” from Labour MPs today who called for her wages to be docked for repeatedly misleading MPs over universal credit.

The Work and Pensions Secretary was accused by her Labour counterpart Margaret Greenwood of being “shockingly complacent” after she apologised last week for “inadvertently misleading” the Commons over a report on universal credit by the National Audit Office (NAO).

Labour sought to “sanction” her handling of universal credit, which has included Auditor General Sir Amyas Morse having to correct Ms McVey’s statements in public.

He rebuked her in an open letter for having falsely claimed that his report called for the roll-out of the scheme to be sped up — rather than stopped to fix the problems have forced 40 per cent of benefit claimants into financial hardship.

Ms Greenwood opened an opposition day debate by telling MPs: “She undermined the report rather than addressing the extremely serious issues it raised.

“Her approach was shockingly complacent — as if oblivious to the hardship so many people are suffering.

“The Secretary of State repeatedly claims her department is testing and learning, but this testing and learning is using people as guinea pigs — this is unacceptable. Where is the dignity?”

She called on Ms McVey to halt universal credit and put forward a “credible plan to fix its many failings before many more people suffer.”

She added that Ms McVey had only apologised after receiving the open letter, and only for one of her three mistakes.

Ms McVey shamelessly defended the two others — claiming that the NAO had not accounted for more recent changes and that her department just had a “different interpretation” than the NAO.

Labour’s motion calls on the government to reduce her ministerial salary to zero for four weeks.

Labour MP Catherine West later raised the case of a constituent who was “sleeping in a tent in a bin chamber” as he was one of the 20 per cent of claimants who did not have internet access to make an application for universal credit.

Ms McVey, while receiving jeers and shouts of “rubbish” and “nonsense” from Labour backbenchers, said: “What we do with people who’ve fallen on hard times, is to reach out to them and support them and if that person is not getting the support I would ask her — work with me.”

As if she would even miss such a paltry amount being deducted from her swollen salary.

Also Damien Green, Chris Grayling and David Gaulk. Smart move by Justine Greening turning down this post it is a real hot potato. Mind you at least we now know if we end up destitute we can always walk to Merseyside, knock on the minister's door and she' ll have some work for us, probably got an army of illegals cleaning her house for a bowl of gruel a day.

UC came up on last week's Question Time. If you still have IpLayer there is probably a better version still on there, this link is poor quality and goes worse just before they get to UC around the last 10 minutes. Worth watching to see Priti Patel getting it from the audience at the end though.

it's not called lying anymore it's called inadvertently not telling the truth so if ever we give wrong information on a esa50 or to a work coach etc thats the get out clause because if it's good enough excuse for the top woman who runs the show surely it's good enough for all of us
