At least one in ten private rental properties advertised by letting agents in England could be unlawfully discriminating against people in receipt of social security benefits, housing experts claim.

Analysis of around 86,000 letting agent adverts on Zoopla, carried out by the National Housing Federation with support from the housing and homeless charity Shelter, found that 8,710 adverts purposefully rejected applications from people on Housing Benefit.

Sky high house prices and a growing shortage in genuinely affordable homes, such as social housing, means low-income households are increasingly forced to rent in the private sector.

This in turn is driving up the Housing Benefit bill because private rented properties tend to be more expensive to rent than social housing and similar low-cost alternatives (council housing, etc).

Figures show there are around 1.4 million people in England are either directly or indirectly discriminated against by landlords and letting agents who advertise their properties as "no DSS" or "no Housing Benefit".

Housing experts say this constitutes a violation of the 2010 Equality Act, with single women and people with disabilities among the worst affected, whilst warning that the worrying statistics could be just the "tip of the iceberg".

This was part of Thatcher`s plan to allow those who could afford to buy their council houses to do so, then when they passed on, they either passed the house to their children ( always a nice gesture) but many of these houses end upon the open market or under the hammer and sold to property developers looking to add to their `portfolio` of houses and high rents. It`s taken a few decades to get up and running and now we see the results of a policy that is now decimating social housing stock.

In the past I did Buy (But Never "Owned" property) you Never own the place, Building Society/Bank Owns it!
It was a Mugs Game, First place I hung onto but in the end lost it.
Never learnt my lesson 20 years of renting Brought again at Auction....... Repossessed
Buying is a Mugs Game, Never Advise anyone to buy, Its far Better to rent.
The Problem as stated above is finding a decent place at a decent rent, Best done "Word of Mouth"
Social Housing has all but gone & Faster under this repressive Government, who just keeps on this "Buy" Crap
OK for the Rich, but what about the Majority of the population.
We need Millions of LOW RENT Social Housing, but it will never happen under the current Government.

Its looking pretty likely we will see a labour government next election we can only hope Corbyn can reinforce our existing socialist institutions like housing and the NHS and our welfare state and curb some of the excesses of capitalism.

Its a disgrace they have all taken an age to get this in the media.Heard this on radio and tv last week big discussions but whether something can actually be done about it will remain to be seen.

The only reason this has become a hot topic now in media/political circles. Is our fckd up rental housing situation in general. Its had to get this bad before they'd do something about it.

The days of buying for 60% of the country are over ,maybe more thanks to the great warehouse economy/wages on offer. As too is renting. This is another reason they wanted to design Universal Credit benefit system. They were told by 'analysts. economics advisers etc.' Things were looking real bad... do this etc.By that time it was all too late. And we are where we are now.People cant afford to buy, cant afford to rent. But they can still work full time visit a food bank and sign on down at joke shop and claim UC. How wonderful.Did i forget the wonderful shared ownership experience too

The days of selling which for some the dream of buy your own home has gone. This will lead to major problems as the banking sector in uk ltd has been really helped/propped up by this.Watch this space.............................when interest rates rise=DISASTER!!

And it looks like it could happen Spring of next year 2019, same time as the Brexit, Exit
and the Collapse of the British Economy
Also Watch Unemployment & Inflation Zoom UP, Wonder how the Tory's will Cover THAT Up.

Yes Paul-UB40 .No doubt the landlord hugging Tories will put a positive spin on all this. While thousands get their homes repossessed or forced into bankruptcy through redundancy lower wages etc.A disaster waiting to happen for sure.

I foresee a time coming and relatively soon! that Universal Credit etc will HAVE to paid as some sort on Universal Basic Income as the wage structure versus expenditure for millions of people is not adding up.The political parties will have to just shut up and make payments to 90% of the population WITHOUT the restrictions/sanctions regime they currently have in place. We are going to have absolute millions of people just working for nothing. This is already happening, but some are slow to see this and for some, now firmly trapped within the false warehouse pack a box like some demented headless chicken, in an economic circus.

Whatever dream the Tories may have had...is OVER! :cheer:
