I recently started a thread about getting a 3 network SIM and using it in my Smartphone, learning a good few things (thanks to Plop!) regarding the usage and the annoyances of it all. But got the `gist` of it.

I now want to start a conversation aimed at not just Smartphones generally, but FEATURE phones that take 3g SIM cards. I have a 3 network PAYG SIM card and currently have it slotted into a Smartphone, but here`s the gripe and the reason for this new thread....the batteries in Smartphones are just NOT as good as the batteries in the basic feature phones on the market. I just can`t get used to the fact that I`m having to recharge the batteries every few days just to keep the battery over the 50% mark.

I have a Samsung E1200 and Nokia 1616 basic phones. These wee phones run rings around Smartphones as far as battery life goes and I know that`s because they are not enabled with the same technology as Smartphones are, but although I took the plunge and started to use a Smartphone, I really don`t use the apps or the internet WiFi anyway, but because I have to connect to the WiFi to do system updates and such to keep the phone working well, I get frustrated that something that is essentially a PHONE needs constant attention.

My question is this....I am looking for a feature phone that is 3g enabled that will accept a 3 SIM so I can make those cheaper calls without the battery half collapsing on me after a day! I looked up YouTube and Googled a few phones, but only came up with the Nokia 515 or 207. And I`m not even sure those phones are 3g? I don`t want to buy one and then find the 3 SIM won`t work in it. I`m only looking for a phone that calls and texts, so a camera/radio or anything else are secondary as my Smartphone does all that!

Any tips on phones that are non Smartphones that are 3g would be welcome.

Just to 'finish up' from the other thread , heres what my reply to that would have been. And ill leave others to come in and maybe reply to this new phone thread. :)
Yeah - itll be down to whether the manufacturer feels the phone is capable enough to step up a major version from 6 to 7. If it happens then cool, but i wouldn't be surprised if it didn't too. I guess if the manufacturer makes an update, and passes it to your phone for updating - then youll hear about it. (well, 'see' it on your phone is probably the correct term. :) )

What you could do - is when your credit runs out, if your still not happy with 3, you could switch to that 1p mobile, as they are on the EE network, and you say you have no problem with those, so maybe that would be an equally good price to 3, but with better signal.

Yeah it seems to be mostly a universal issue with smartphones battery power. I think most people have just got used to charging their phone every day/evening or whenever to keep it going through the day when your out. I guess the older phones have the advantage of more simplistic screens, and fairly simple processors in there compared to smartphones. But maybe one day they will up the battery sizes safely and get better usage from screens and processors and such.

Yeah hotspots can be tricky - but usually if its 'locked' then you know its all passworded and private. Some will allow you to connect, but the first page it will bring up when it connects, can sometimes be a 'give us your email and details if you want free internet'.. which , depending on who it is, is fairly easy to do - but some make it a chore.

Thanks guys. I`ve got a stinking sore throat and cold today  but managed to do some looking online for a `feature` phone that has 3g connectivity. I didn`t find much apart from the Nokia 206 which costs more than a basic smartphone....and the Alcatel 2045x.....and I`m kicking myself because I bought one of these last year, couldn`t get used to the texting as it wouldn`t play ball with the basic `abc` texting feature, sold it to a shop locally for £10 just to be rid of it....and now I`ve found out that it was 3g enabled AND accepts the 3 network. :S So I messed up there by selling it before I could get help with the texting thing.. I`ve seen one on ebay selling for £10 with a few quid postage, but I`m not sure whether I want/need another phone. I could buy it just to be able to use the 3 SIM in it, but then I may find that the signal is just as naff as it is when I use it in the two Smartphones, so I may be spending money on this phone again just to be disappointed.

This mobile phone game is a bit of a juggling act when it comes to getting a phone that accepts 3g and isn`t a Smartphone! End of the day, like you Paul,I`m happy just to have a phone that calls and texts on a cheap tariff. The 3 network (or so I thought) would offer that, but the signal is intermittent in both Smartphones, sometimes non existent and cuts out. But the annoying thing is, I wanted to use the 3 SIM for the cheaper calls/texts, but be able to put the SIM into a non Smartphone. I`m still looking...

Plop, that 1p mobile is dirt cheap, but the catch is....you have to top-up three times a year (every....I think it`s every 120 days) and the limit is £10 credit a time, so probably fine for people who use their phone a lot, but may be caught out if they suddenly hit a flat spot and forget to top up the credit and lose it.

I`ve looked at the 02 network (who Tesco piggy-back off) and they are 5p/5p/5p for calls texts and data, where Tesco are charging 8p/4p and more for data usage. The 02 signal I get through Tesco (much like the Asda EE signal) is great, so 3 may well get the boot and I may get an 02 PAYG SIM once some of the credit is used up on my 3 and Tesco SIMs. Not quite as cheap as 3, but cheaper than Tesco.

Another question. I got a few notifications regarding `app updating`....but it never states which apps?

Sorry Cod, Ive not logged in for a while and hadn't noticed as I recently wiped my pc and had simply not realised Id not been here for a while as chrome shows my regular places i visit on its front page and id just not realised! haha :D oops.

app updating.. ermm.. its possible it had downloaded and updated by the time you saw the notification maybe? if you look through your installed apps (thru play store 'installed' apps section), it usually says when the app was updated.. maybe that would help ?

Good to see you back Plop. The strange thing is, when I go to settings or the apps list itself, it only shows which apps are there and I`m not sure how to access their backgrounds or be able to manage them except to disable or uninstall them. The Alcatel phone (the one I bought from Curry`s/PCWorld) on ebay is what you might call a entry level phone, but although it`s basic, it also seems to lack the obvious means to look into what the phone is doing `behind the scenes` or perhaps I`m just not savvy enough to remember where to look!

That`s the one thing I don`t like about Smartphones, Even though I only switch mine on once or twice a day to check for texts or missed calls (don`t get many if at all!) it just seems to be a battery eater and something I can use to make a few calls on. I`m using the Asda SIM in the Alcatel and the 3 SIM in the larger GoFone. My wee 2g Nokia works off my Tesco SIM but I`m aiming to have only two PAYG SIM`s active soon once the credit runs down on the Tesco one. I`ve decided to stick with 3 (cheapest) and Asda (who use EE) as my back up. Although 02 have a 5p a minute/calls SIM I`m thinking about getting at some point and ditching Asda as they are 8p calls and 4p tests. It`s all about using the SIms that cost less at the end of the day.

Done an online `Chat` with a 3 customer service agent earlier to ask if they could remove the voicemail from my phone. I had to quickly set up voicemail last month as I received a voice message from someone and couldn`t hear it as my VM wasn`t set up, so went through the phone prompts to do so. Now I realise that having voicemail set up isn`t a good thing as after so many rings, if you don`t answer the phone, it sends the call to voicemail and I am then charged to hear the message!, so wanted it removed. It still seems to be there in my call/contact settings though? How do I know if they have removed/deleted the voicemail? I haven`t received a text to say so? 3 usually text me if anything is done/changed?

I am thinking of buying a new phone soon.

The DOOGEE X5 Max Pro Smartphone on Amazon (www.amazon.co.uk/Official-DOOGEE-X5-Smartphone-SIM-Free/dp/B01N3OROXD/) for £68.99 seem to have everything I need.

I want a phone that lasts a whole day. With a 4000mah battery and according to most reviewers this phone should last me several days with light usage on one single charge. It also got a Dual Sim which is great, my current phone only got one SIM slot and I wanted to sometimes switch between different networks.

One thing I like about this phone it got corning gorilla glass screen, dunno which version, but I sometimes tend to drop my phone. As it's made of plastic I doubt it will break that easily. Also it's only 5 inches so it won't be too big for my hands.

It does seem like a good purchase and I think I can sell my old phone for at least £30 in my local sell & buy Facebook group, so I'd be only be paying £39 for this phone.

What do you guys think of this phone?

Hi Ducray. Sounds good to me. I have a GoFone smartphone (5.5" inch screen) that I got from a friend last Christmas as she has too many phones! These are also very good. Will find a link for you shortly as I`m not long in and a bit knackered!

Overall, these phones are made for the Chinese market, but don`t let that fool you. They are Android and work just as well as their pricey counterparts like the Samsung`s etc...

Go with the guides on Amazon and make sure you get a guarantee/warranty with the phone if it`s brand new. The battery for mine costs about £20! So I`m hoping mine last a long time before I need to replace it! If you manage to sell your current phone for £30 then the new phone is a bargain with the cost cut. If it`s specifications are what you want, then go for it. Just be wary of dual sim phones as I read not that long ago that in the UK, they don`t seem to work well as stated, or their compatibility is not what it should be? I don`t know the rights and wrongs of duel SIM in the UK, but my GoFone is also duel SIM.I put my 3 SIM and my Asda SIM into it at the same time and thought this is going to be great having both SIM`s in one phone.....but no. I found some issues with accessing one or the other, can`t remember what it was, but it was more annoying than having a single SIM in two phones! I`m no techie when it comes to Smartphones, but it`s not the end of the world if you find both SIM`s play games when inserted. They shouldn't, but just be aware of any provider problems or signal issues.

Here is the link to the GoFone website. I have the 5,5" inch one.
www.my-go.co/en/products/gofone/

My smaller Alcatel Pixi 4 (5" inch) runs android version 6 where the GoFone is 4.4 so the Alcatel runs a more updated version of the android software.

That Doogee looks pretty good for the reduced price and for what you get. :)

Cod, have you looked in setting>apps, and then clicked on an app itself? it usually has a few bits and peices in there, such as cache and other permission settings i think. As for managing them in way of more than disabling or uninstalling - if you hit the little 'square' button on the phones main menu (the one that brings up the 'index card' type list of apps/things youv ran or used, you can shuffle through those and click the 'x' to close then - although to what degree it helps in phone performance or power usage etc I dunno.. maybe not much - but i believe it shuts down the app until you start it again. ish. or somethin like that :D

As for voicemail - i would imagine if youv asked, theyv switched it off. Best bet would be to call from another number to your phone and see if it sends you to voicemail?. i always used to have voicemail turned off (and i still do - although ive been caught out a couple times when switching sims/phones), , because you could guarantee id get an official call from someone and theyd leave a voice mail!!.. once happened to me about 3-4 years ago when i got a call from jokeshop about something and i hadnt any credit in my phone to collect the voicemail so i ended up going out to top up because checking voicemails can cost!

Thanks again Plop. Will call myself this afternoon and see if it rings off and sends to voicemail. If it does, I will actually call 333 to the network and ask them to switch the damn thing off! I hope the guy I asked in Chat has done so though. Will let you know later on....once I`ve woke up!

Hmmmm. Rang my 3 phone yesterday and after about seven rings, it gave a message saying something along the lines of `X is not available to take your call at the moment, please leave a message`... blah de blah.....sounds like that noob I did the online chat with hasn`t removed the voicemail after all. My credit then appeared on my 2g Tesco mobile phone (the phone I was ringing from) and it cost 8p? What was the charge for I wonder? I didn`t activate the call or leave any message? So is this what happens if your phone rings, you don`t answer it, a message then appears and I`m charged for it? It`s no wonder people want voice mail removed if it charges for the service before we even listen to the message left? Bloody nightmare.

I will call 3 to ask them why this wasn`t removed when I asked. Their answer will probably be that I didn`t call them. Well that`s what bloody online chat is for, surely? The guy I spoke to said he was removing it when I gave my number and answered a few security questions.

I have another question about photo storage on a smartphone. Now I`m not one for taking photos at the best of times, but recently I looked at this feature on my GoFone 3g smartphone (not a well known brand but does what it`s supposed to)!

On the GoFone website it states:
So our engineers decided to make the Internal Storage larger so you can install loads of apps (as you can only install apps inside the phone). This means that the Phone Storage is smaller (typically around ~1.5GB, or space for thousands of photos or music files).

So the Phone storage is where photos/images are stored and they say this phone can store 1.5GB - or space for literally thousands of photos.....so why then did I manage to take an image of a newspaper page, it saved in the gallery app, but then when I went to take a photo of a small card that I made, the camera seemed to take the photo but when I go to `gallery` it`s not there?

If there are any budding photographers out there, please tell me where I`m going wrong? I open the camera, see the image and press the camera icon. The phone usually flashes when it takes a photo, but this time it didn`t. Am I supposed to tell it where to store the photos I take? I thought the phone would just default them to the Gallery section and store them there?

You shouldnt need to tell it where to store photos, although from my understanding, an app (be it camera or other app that uses the camera) will store its photos where it wishes to.. the gallery i think is just a place where it displays all photos on the device (regardless of where it saves them)..

At least thats my understanding of it. Doesnt really answer where your missing photo/s have gone  - but maybe theres an option in the gallery to allow you to refresh itself or something? find all photos or something like that ?

That`s the thing Plop, I`m not sure if (a) it`s even taken the photo or (b) it`s taken it but the photo image is not in the gallery? Just wondering where it might be stored on the phone! I need to be aware of where I want the phone to put any photos I take so I can access them easily, but right now, I`m not sure where that is!

I took a photo of a newspaper page a few months ago and heard the shutter noise as the flash took the photo. The small image then appeared in the bottom right corner of the phone telling me the image was taken and when I looked in the gallery, it was saved there without me asking. But when I took that photo this morning, the shutter noise and the flash were not noticeable so wonder if it actually took the photo? I done it twice, but nothing showed.

Think I need to find out how this phone saves images as the website doesn`t seem clear on that.

While on the subject of smartphones generally, does anyone know what a UUID is? I seen this on my phone as uuid.text and having had a quick google online, it`s something to do with developers? or some kind of number that identifies the phone? What I want to know is, should I be deleting this or allowing it to stay on my phone? I`ve no idea if it`s something to do with the apps or the workings of the actual phone so don`t want to delete it incase it`s something that is required? I`ve not had enough time to look it up properly but even if I did, I doubt the information online would make me understand what it is!

Still haven`t managed to find the photo I took on my larger phone yet but my smaller Alcatel Pixi phone is taking photos and storing them in either under photos, pictures or gallery. Not sure what`s up with my other phone but no doubt will figure it out...

I'd maybe leave it be :) it kinda sounds important and being only a text file will be tiny in size so won't have any impact on space etc.

Think your right Plop. Will leave it be until I have time to look into it more. I did manage to get the photo/flash working again on my larger phone though! I had to switch something `on`....can`t remember what it was but I was in the camera screen and tapped on one of the icons and it asked for something to be `switched on`....so I presumed it was something to do with the camera being able to work and save the photo I was about to take. I did so and this time, it made the shutter noise and saved the image into the corner of the screen. :) Just need to test this more often so I can work it correctly when I want to use it.
