Was thinking about this Today;
Back in the "Good Old Days" (1970s) before all this Health & Safety Madness, One could just roll up at a Building Site,
Say you could do this and that, get a Days Work Trial [unpaid] and If you could do what you said you could, Bingo Full time Job :)

As A result being selth Taught, with a few certificates along the way I can turn my hand to;

Painting & Decorating [Full Trade Certificate], Floor & Wall Tiling, [Full Trade Certificate] ; Concrete Pouring, Ground Works; Brick & Block Work;
Dry Lining; Sewer & Manhole Construction; Fitted Kitchen & Bathroom installing; Plumbing; Electrical [ Done quite a few full House re-wires till they changed the law :( ]
Hard Landscaping; Patios; Ponds; Decking; Tree Felling [Chain Saw certificate]; Fencing; Shed and Greenhouse erection;
Not Forgetting Computers; Desktop Publishing [Certificate] ; Web Site Building; Have also done Architectural House plans;

So can find the Odd Job in Retirement B)

But Why oh Why do they make it so hard for the young to get work today with this insistence on "Paperwork"
Its skills you want not "Bits of Paper". ;)

I thought it was to do with 'liability' & insurance Paul, no firm is going to touch you if they think it will cost them. As well as many people/worker's it seems now have to pay for their own training, gone are the days when the firm would pay from any training and make it tax deductible from there profits? And they wonder why there is a skills shortage in this country... :blink:
Do not let the behaviour of others destroy your inner peace.

Hi Paul,

Your totally right but.

Thanks to the TORYS creating millions of or should say help create an environment for... box packing, low wage shelf stacking jobs :evil: ,most are now working harder to get poorer :evil: .

AI is on its way in many sectors of global economies, and with the huge problem we have in the UK regards to housing shortage and policies,building & construction jobs will be one of the few sectors left to actually pay people a living!

Remember the days when you could change your car at least every 5 years, take a holiday, afford prescription costs, and not need to think of visiting a food bank or have to do the maths on fuel and transport expenditure as you are likely to be worse off working than unemployed.Gone forever for the over 40s 50s for sure unless they can maybe retrain to be a school teacher :whistle:

Silly me i forgot 1 more insignificant thing, pay into a personal pension.

Thats how totally deluded this government are;they created that idea as an incentive for smaller companies employing very few people and those people working for them companies are barely surviving,already living hand to mouth rather than investing in the bloody stock market.

Agree Jobber, Also back in the "So-called" Good Old Days; one had to be prepared to work away from home, sleep in the back of your Transit Van, Being mostly on "Price Work" work all hours as fast as you could and still maintain top standards,
Injuries or illness meant no money, so one worked regardless;
Up to 10 years ago many were better off on Benefits, now that has all stopped,
With This Country now on the same level as the 3rd World; Nothing for the young, Just a lifetime of Poverty, Starvation,
And being Homeless, Ah Yes Conservative Victorian Values yet again. :angry:

And no doubt Mr Chancellor will make it worse in the next year or two with his cuts to welfare to save the economy. I read today that they are even thinking about scrapping 1p, 2p pence pieces and £50 notes. This was something Camron and his minions were planning, but didn`t go ahead with it. They seem to be looking at everything and anything they can do to save money or to make people`s lives worse. I`m waiting on the day they announce everyone claiming UC will have to wear an electronic tag to identify them as they pass through job centre plus doors. :angry:
