The DWP seem to have forgotten their mandate on mental health. This story is only the tip of what will become a large iceberg if Universal Credit is allowed to progress. This man needs guidance at the very least. He`s ASKING for help, so where is it? Food banks can only help when someone is referred to them officially.

Sanctions need to STOP. If someone hasn`t turned up for an appointment with their work coach, why does that work coach not start the ball rolling and try to contact the individual (email, phone, letter) and if they contact someone saying they can`t cope mentally or are not well, a sanction should never be the answer. In the real world (something the Tories don`t live in) there should be a guidance there which means further assessment of that person should be done within one month to identify their needs and act appropriately. Removing someone`s lifeline when they are seeking help is never the answer. It`s fair to say that the structure for all this isn`t always there and the individual themselves won`t have a clue about who can help them and many will say well all he had to do was meet his commitments. That`s easy enough when your sane and not mentally and/or physically ILL.
