Grandad, 62, battered by security guard while attending 'cruel' disability assessment with his wife

EXCLUSIVE: Keith Langham, 62, needed seven stitches to a head wound after an assault by Chris Bryan while accompanying his disabled wife to an assessment

UPDATED 11 SEP 2018

Keith Langham suffered major head injuries following an assault by a security guard

A grandad of 62 was assaulted by a muscle-bound security guard after he took his disabled wife for a benefits assessment.

Keith Langham was left with blood pouring from a head wound after helping wife Karen, 61, with the interview for her Personal Independence Payments.

She was told that people like her ‘needed to learn to help themselves’ amid ugly scenes at her first appointment.
It was carried out on behalf of Independent Assessment Services, formally known as ATOS, in Carlisle, Cumbria.

At the second interview, Keith, who is 5ft 5in tall and 10-and-a-half stone, had to be taken to hospital after he was grabbed by powerfully-built six footer Chris Bryan, then aged 30.

He pushed him into a door then held Keith in a headlock so that he struggled to breath. The incident was recorded on Keith’s phone before police were called to the centre in Newcastle Business Park.

Grandfather-of-two Keith had seven stitches in a head wound. He and his wife then faced the ordeal of giving evidence against Bryan, a ‘Boxercise’ personal trainer who was found guilty of assault by beating in May this year.

Semi-retired Keith, a services manager said: “He was a very large guy, I would say he was about 6ft 4in tall and 16st, heavily built, shaven headed. He said he was security and we had to leave the building. But he was not wearing any ID.

There is NO excuse for a security guard to behave like this. If the man was becoming abusive or any danger to others, all he had to do was call the police to the office, surely? Taking matters into his own hands is just asking for trouble. He obviously felt he could `handle him` on his own by tactics other than he was trained for and negotiation doesn`t seem one of them.

Assessors at these offices can ask people questions that can become heated and it`s always better to take a moment before answering, or just saying yes or no to answers. My sister has just told me in a text message she was asked at her PIP re-assessment, `can you use a kettle`? I would not have said yes or no to this question, I would have replied that lifting a kettle with my hand is painful due to gripping around the handle and the weight of the water puling on the nerve between my thumb and my first finger. This comes across better than saying no, I can`t hold or lift a kettle.

That mans injuries look serious so the altercation must have been rougher than a security guard needs to be.

Sadly I was expecting something like this to happen sooner or later. The violence, cruelty and aggression that is inherent in the benefits system is always there, it's just that this time it has resulted in actual physical injury. Problem is if you say anything to defend yourself it instantly becomes your fault. Whether dealing with Personal Independence Payments or benefits staff in the Job Centre there is always that tension there, which is why it attracts bitter and grudgeful Daily Mail readers as staff, who make it their personal mission to make people as miserable as possible.

I am quite amazed that we do not hear about more incidents like this. It has been said on here before though that they probably have a media blackout. I find some of those security staff very provocative at times and quite pally with some of the aggressive types too. Looking at the age of the victim of this assault by a govt employee it's the same old easy target syndrome only manifesting for all to see. Probably paid peanuts and desperate for any job so that they don't have to be on the other side of the fence knowing what they could be on the receiving end of. Let's see how he feels like trying to get a job if he has a criminal record after this - after giving an old man the advice to help himself the security guy is likely going to have to eat those words even if he gets paid employment as he will have to claim UC but then he probably already was and the stress has got to him. I know where my sympathies lay.
