UK Prime Minister Theresa May will face a vote of no confidence in her leadership later on Wednesday.

Conservative MPs will vote between 18:00 GMT and 20:00 GMT.

The challenge to Mrs May's position comes after the required 48 letters calling for a contest were delivered.

Mrs May, who has been prime minister since shortly after the UK voted to leave the European Union in 2016, has faced criticism in her party for the Brexit plan she has negotiated.

The prime minister is expected to make a statement in Downing Street at 08:30 GMT.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May will face a vote of confidence in her leadership later on Wednesday.

In a statement in Downing Street, Mrs May said: "I will contest that vote with everything I have got".

She said a new prime minister would have to scrap or extend Article 50 - the mechanism taking Britain out of the EU on 29 March - "delaying or even stopping Brexit".

It is not yet known how quickly the result of the secret ballot will be announced, but Mrs May needs to get a majority in her favour to win it.

If that happens she cannot be challenged for at least another year.

If Mrs May does not win the vote there would then be a Conservative leadership contest in which she could not stand.

There is also an option that even if Mrs May won - but not overwhelmingly - she may decide to stand down as party leader.

Because the Conservative Party is the largest party in the House of Commons, whoever is leader of the party would be expected to be prime minister.

If Mrs May is ousted as Conservative leader later she would be expected to stay on as a caretaker prime minister until a new leader is selected by the party, a process that could take six weeks.

If there are multiple candidates, Conservative MPs hold a series of votes to choose two to go forward to a vote of party members.

Sir Graham Brady, chairman of backbench Tories, who is overseeing the vote, said: "We are looking at the leadership of the party and clearly the prime minister remains until there is a successor."

personally id like to see bo jo in there because well he's a clown and who wouldn't want a clown in charge of the tory party to oversee them through till next election helping make them look like fools
But if the torys want a half decent leader I think mogs the way to go in our current situation coz we could use a pro brexiteer in charge of this shit show

But is it not 'Better the devil you know' @Finnste  ? Also do they publish the names of the 48 x Tory Judas's that has caused this? Let hope the any former Minister of the DWP do not go for the job, as look at all the burying their heads in the sand over the Universal Credit shambles?

But is it not 'Better the devil you know

you mean keep may ? sure she is doing a terrible job destroying the Tory party and will lead to there inevitable downfall if she hasn't already, pretty sure bo jo would do the same though
Mogg I think would do a half decent job of brexit he's the best for the job out of the front runners but worst from our perspective if we want to see the torys out

I know some torys fancy amber rudd but I think she would be a terrible choice because I have seen her pushing for hate speech laws against the alt right bogey man and as you all know by now that label gets thrown around inappropriately the majority of the time. and we still remember the windrush scandal she shouldn't have been allowed back in parliament never mind a shot at the big seat
largely she's not very well known to me tbh other than those incidents but I don't get a good vibe from her she's probably the one I don't want to get in power the most

I like Nigel Evans but doubt he would be high on the list of candidates to be leader. He comes across as a marginal Tory and speaks more like a Labour man. Not what the Tory party want because he`s the type of bloke who would dare to change Universal Credit or pay more attention to people on lower incomes. Just my thought on this but can`t have Moggs (sorry Finnster!) he`s just too religious for my liking and no doubt he would bring in policies that would make Thatcher look like an angel.

It's just a guessing game who will get in if she gets the boot most likely it'll be like last time and we all get surprised with some relatively unknown MP we didn't see coming

And can anyone do a better job than May......pretty much anyone could :P

I think Martin Lewis (money saving expert) would be a good choice, shame he`s not an MP. The Prime Ministers we have had over the last 15- 20 years have done nothing for people in our position but rather, worsen it. Changing the Tory leader doesn`t change the party, so we can`t expect a miracle at Christmas I`m afraid, whatever the outcome.

I knew he was a gay man but it seems his `past` has outed him as not worthy of gaining any momentum within the Conservative party. Losing his mother and having some alcohol problems can account for someone acting out of character, but the sexual activities mentioned have obviously played a bigger role in showing that he was capable of behaviour that he should have known could kill his ambitions as an MP. Shame as he does come across as a decent chap. But perhaps not someone you would sit with in a bar!

Seriously, you really have been brainwashed by propaganda if you really believe all the tosh about Boris being a clown. He is anything but.

Also, Jacob Rees-Mogg a "half-decent leader"? He'd take us back to the fecking dark ages. Sorry, you are a Daily Mail troll and I cannot take any further posts from you seriously.

Only good speck of News in the distant future May is not going to stand for leader at the next election, well so she says.
But with the widely expected collapse of Brexit next spring, I still smell an election in the Spring.
and J Corbyn is ready and waiting. :)

Well look who open a fresh can of venom .... for the record no bo jo is not relay a clown, You think I don't know his oafish behaviour is just an act to make him seem more endearing to the public ?
Clowns are just an act when they take off the make up there are normal people under there and bo jo is no different he's a man acting like a clown so don't be surprised when that title sticks.

As for Mog despite what you think I made my decisions based on the things I have seen him do and his strength of character and his conviction with what he believes

did you see him walk in to a crow of angry social justice warriors in the middle of an angry protest and face them down on his own ? because I did and he relay impressed me with how bold and fearless he was that day his unwillingness to back down and allow them to push him around
did you watch him tear May deal apart in parliament the other day ? all the difficult questions he was asking about the backstop and how foolish he mad May and her deal look
I happen to think he talks allot of sense about brexit and could be the leader we need to get us out of the EU.
Do i like his overall policy's ? no because he's a fucking Tory just like the rest, do i want any of them to be in office ? hell no but fact is if may had got the boot someone would have had to take the job and mog in my opinion looks like the best of a bad bunch.

LoL daily mail I don't even read it tarquin and if you think I sound like a daily mail troll that kinda suggests you do read it since your such an expert in what they sound like
Sorry, you are a Daily Mail troll and I cannot take any further posts from you seriously.

If that's how you feel don't read my posts no one is forcing you to and keep your nasty little opinions and slurs to yourself while your at it. Despite what you think this site is not only for left leaning people, Fighting for a stronger welfare state isn't strictly a left wing idea and I'm perfectly entitled to share my opinions here like anyone else but the difference is unlike you I'm not going around intentionally insulting anyone for having differing opinions.

put your money where your mouth is miguel show me the posts where anyone espouses a narative of racial purity and superiority and advocates for segregation and an ethno state or any form of ethnic cleansing.
because honestly I don't think you know what the real Alt right actually stand for just like you have proven you don't know what a fascist is these are just buzz words to people like you.

It's people like you who have helped create this culture of silence by throwing around words like that inappropriately and your doing a great job proving my point.

Put it this way, yesterdays little `vote` was more to do with May confirming her leadership of HER party and nothing more. Given the result, she`s not going to find it anymore easy. The Brexit deal has NOT changed in any shape or form and if she can`t get a signed legal pact that the Irish borders won`t be messed up, her deal will stay the same and Parliament will vote it down (when she decides to allow a vote on it that is), Just as they were going to Last Tuesday but didn`t get a chance. So if nothing changes, she`s just delaying the inevitable and frustrating things.

The only thing that can happen now is, she gets no written (in law) confirmation by the EU on the Irish backstop, she is forced to bring the deal to a commons vote, it gets voted down (as we all expect it to if nothing has changed) and THAT`s when Labour, the DWP and all the others bring about the no confidence agenda in the government. She has to resign, a general election is called....AND.....Labour tells the nation that they will allow a SECOND REFURENDUM on the EU. Put this BACK to the nation. This alone would be a boost to Labour`s chances of winning the election. But they MUST offer people more than just an election because the Tories are not easy to defeat and always find a way to stay in power. Can you imagine living under another FIVEYEARS of their rule?

More foodbank usage, sanction trigger happy work coaches and living our lives chained to a computer looking for work? Endless work capability assessments under the SAME private companies raking in massive profits on the backs of those who are least able to fight? I feel a yellow vest moment coming on....

I'm prety sure a second referendum would cost labour a snap election if they dont stick to the original result and follow through with brexit not to mention the potential for civil unrest all those leave voters who feel cheated
and some polls i have read suggest the country is still very split on this issue so with that in mind what will a second referendum make any clearer ?
it's just gona gt everyone riled up again your gona have a very narrow margin result potential going either way and everyone bitching for a third referendum

and if we can have a second why not a third and a forth till we get the result we want. It's very undemocratic to hold a second referendum because they don't like the original result
and if we get that second referendum and the remain camp win by a margin cant i just make the same argument only this time they would have set a precedent for that kind of Anti democratic behaviour and legitimized it ?
