I Completely missed the Game :(
This is the most "Open" World Cup for years, who will become the final winners is
still far from certain. :)

Lovren immaculate, Argentina a shambles & France unconvincing – World Cup talking points
Henry Jackson
World Cup
21 June 2018
Argentina were hideously bad in their latest World Cup setback on Thursday, but Dejan Lovren‘s impressive form continued.
Another three matches lay tantalisingly in front of us on Thursday, as the group stage slowly begins to reach its business end.
Australia and Denmark earned a share of the spoils first up, France edged out Peru and Argentina were humbled by a buoyant Croatia side.

As usual, there were talking points galore.

The Good
Imagine being told back in October that Lovren would be bossing it at a World Cup and keeping Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo quiet in the space of a month.
It has been quite a turnaround in fortunes for the likeable centre-back since his nightmare away to Tottenham and he was excellent as Croatia humiliated Argentina 3-0.

That’s back-to-back clean-sheets for Lovren and his teammates this summer, and they are a definite dark horse at this tournament.

There is a lovely balance to the team, especially in midfield, where Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic cut an imperious duo, not to mention the more unsung Marcelo Brozovic.

Disagree with Lovern as he very near cost a goal with letting the ball go back to keeper when under pressure. Confusion in which at times you need to just put it in row z. Lovern is the gift that will keep giving.
Argentina are shocking to watch what with there pool of talent. Messi and Aguero alone should get you out the group. Been quite impressed with Croatia but as the odds suggest i still think the usual suspects will be in the final/ winning the comp. Top teams play poor and dig out results.

Germany salvage World Cup hopes with late winner against Sweden in Sochi

A late winner from Toni Kroos gave Germany a 2-1 win over Sweden and salvaged their World Cup hopes in a thrilling encounter in Sochi.

The defending champions’ chances of qualification from Group F had appeared in tatters before Kroos’ late winner.
Down to 10 men after defender Jerome Boateng had received a second yellow card on 82 minutes, and with the scores level at 1-1, Germany won a free-kick on the edge of the box which was laid off to Kroos who curled the ball into the top corner.

The drama deep into injury time had followed an equalizer from Marco Reus early in the second half, which canceled out Ola Toivonen’s sublime 32nd-minute lob for Sweden.
Germany started the brighter of the two sides in Sochi, with Julian Draxler and Marco Reus particularly lively early on.

Waiting to see how England do shortly. I`ve not seen any of Panama`s games but surely England can topple them? Not sure if Panama have any Ronaldo`s up their sleeves though.

Tournament continues to throw up quality matches. It was good to see England brush aside Panama with their silly antics. Kane was amazing to keep his cool on both penalties and in pole position for golden boot.

I think Sweden are going to regret giving that free kick away at the end for a very long time, they had conceded another just minutes earlier in the same place and I was amazed they didn't learn the lesson. Be just like Germany to have recovered by the next game and win the tournament.

Two teams that have really impressed me in their second games are Nigeria and Columbia. A few already knocked out. On to the final group decider matches now.

Reality check for Russia after ruthless Uruguay run riot in 3-0 rout

25 Jun, 2018 18:54

Cinderella’s carriage is still rolling – just about. The underdog hosts charmed neutrals in their first two matches, but a stingy Luis Suarez-led Uruguay showed the standard Russia must match if it wants the ball to continue.

As if by the wave of a magic wand, everything fell right for Russia against Saudi Arabia and Egypt, but the spell wore off with a hangover in Samara, where the home team was first unlucky and then poor. A precision strike from Barcelona’s Suarez, a freak deflection, and a quick red card meant the game was over before the first half was out.

Despite being unsure what result will guarantee a match-up with Spain, Portugal or Iran in the second round, the two already-qualified teams fielded near full-strength line-ups for their decider.

A 0-0 draw would have been enough for Russia, due to superior goal difference, but within ten minutes they knew they would have to find the net at least once. Yuri Gazinskii dived into a late challenge on the edge of the area, and Igor Akinfeev was late diving for his left as Suarez delivered a low shot past a wall that offered little protection.

Now searching for a goal, Russia appeared galvanized, with good chances for Denis Cheryshev and Artem Dzyuba, the heroes of its two opening games. But then, just as the game leveled out, a cleared corner fell to Diego Laxalt, who pulled his shot wide, only for it to strike Cheryshev’s foot and deflect past the wrong-footed Akinfeev.

Egypt star Salah signs off with goal but Saudis snatch late 2-1 win
25 Jun, 2018 16:00

© Chen Yichen / Global Look Press
Mohamed Salah signed off from Russia with a goal but saw his Egypt team suffer a late defeat as Saudi Arabia snatched a 2-1 win in an entertaining game in Volgograd.

Going into their final Group A encounter the teams knew their World Cup chances were over, having both lost their opening two games.
However, the dead rubber status of the game did not stop the teams from playing out an entertaining encounter punctuated with incident.

Salah had been the subject of speculation he would quit the World Cup early over apparent unhappiness in the Egypt camp, but made light of the claims by racing onto a long ball in the 22nd minute and lobbing past Saudi goalkeeper Yasser Al-Mosailem for his second goal at Russia 2018.

Then came a moment of brilliance from Egypt ‘keeper Essam El Hadary, who at 45 years old was setting the record for the oldest player ever to appear at a World Cup finals.

Expected more attacking from Russia but they seemed very slow today. Passing was terrible, especially near the goal where that mattered the most. They should have just got on the ball and took aim regardless of whether one of their team-mates was nearby. They didn`t show any gung-ho spirit really and that`s what lost them the game. Expecting Spain & Portugal to be virtual walkovers tonight in comparison.

I wouldn't be too sure regarding Portugal. Take Ronaldo out and they have a very average team. Personally I'd like to see Iran win (just to see Ronaldo cry), but I think Portugal will probably sneak a narrow win.

Good point Tarquin and Renaldo nearly was sent off in that game! Lucky for him he got a yellow! This VAR thing seems to pick up on lesser offences and allows the more serious tackles to be overlooked? Something the commentators were picking up on during that game.

Praise for Iran & Morocco as underdogs depart World Cup with heads held high
25 Jun, 2018 21:07

Ricardo Moraes, Fabrizio Bensch / Reuters

Iran and Morocco have departed the World Cup to a chorus of praise after they produced thrilling performances to take heavyweights Portugal and Spain to the wire in the final round of Group B games.

Both Iran and Morocco played a full part in a sensational climax to Group B before settling for draws in their respective games against Portugal and Spain.

Morocco already knew they were eliminated going into their final game against Spain in Kaliningrad, but that did not stop them from producing a thrilling display that saw them set for victory until Iago Aspas scored an injury time equalizer.

The plaudits poured in for a team that departed Russia with 1 point from three games but with praise ringing in their ears for a brave display of attacking verve.
Iran faced Portugal in Saransk and ran Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. mightily close after coming from behind to equalize and almost snatching a dramatic win that would have seen them qualify for the last 16, before ultimately having to settle for 1-1.

Spain set up last 16 clash with Russia after grabbing late draw against eliminated Morocco

25 Jun, 2018

A dramatic late goal from Iago Aspas produced an extraordinary climax to Group B, with Spain snatching first place following a 2-2 draw with Morocco, as Portugal conceded at the death in their own parallel clash against Iran.

Spain appeared destined for a knockout game against Group A winners Uruguay, after a performance in which both their defense and attackers did not replicate the brilliance of their midfield, led by the retiring Andres Iniesta, and were made to pay when Moroccan substitute Youssef En-Nesyri drilled a header into the top corner 10 minutes from the end.

But Aspas, another substitute, flicked a clever finish into the goal during injury time, which was put on the scoreboard only following a VAR review. The effort positioned Spain ahead of fellow Iberians on goals scored, and means the Furia Roja will play against hosts Russia in Moscow on Sunday, while Portugal travel down to Sochi to play Uruguay the day before.

Morocco, who played well in their first two games, but only managed to get on the scoresheet once their fate was sealed. The North African side leaves Russia with their heads held high, and a distinct feeling of what might have been.
