Peru 2-0 Australia: Guerrero among goals as Peru record 1st World Cup win for 36 years

26 Jun, 2018

Peru captain Paolo Guerrero - almost banned from playing at the Russia 2018 World Cup for ingesting cocaine - assisted one goal and socred the other as Peru won their first World Cup game for 36 years versus Australia in Sochi.

Guerrero provided a delicious chip for teammate Andre Carrillo inside the Australia box for the Benfica man to volley across his body and low into the far corner of the Australia goal for the opener on 18 minutes.

Then in the second half, Guerrero turned scorer when he swiveled and turned in Christian Cueva’s deflected pass to double the Peruvian lead on 50 minutes.

Guerrero would not have played in the Russia 2018 tournament if his ban for ingesting cocaine had not been lifted by the Swiss Supreme Court with just two weeks left until the tournament kicked off.

Australia captain Mile Jedinak wrote a letter in support of Guerrero's appeal against his 14-month ban before his hearing last month. Such was his impact in the game, the Socceroos skipper could be left regretting his noble actions.

Peruvian fans had touched the hearts of all those they met in Russia. For many of them, it was the first World Cup in which Peru had taken part int heir lifetime, the last being 36 years ago at Spain 1982.

Both teams are out of the World Cup, but Peru go away with a good win, Australia I thought were doing "OK" In the first half but fell apart in the second

World Cup sees first goalless draw as Denmark and France play out dour 0-0 in Moscow

26 Jun, 2018

The 2018 World Cup saw its first goalless game as Denmark and France played out a dour 0-0 in their final Group C match at Luzhniki in Moscow.

The result – coupled with Australia’s 2-0 defeat in their closing Group C game against Peru – means Denmark qualify for the last 16 along with France, although the pair produced a game to forget in Moscow.

Every other game at Russia 2018 had seen at least one goal – meaning 37 matches in total – but the record run came to an ignominious end as the two European nations failed to score in a game devoid of the verve and endeavor that has been the hallmark of the Russia 2018 World Cup so far.

France went into the game knowing they had already booked their last 16 place, following their opening two wins, while Denmark knew a point would likely be enough to see them through after four points from their first two matches.

France boss Didier Deschamps chose to rest Paul Pogba, who was on a yellow card going into the game, while Thomas Lemar started on the left and Steve Mandanda made a rare start in goal as Hugo Lloris was rested.

Disappointed with Denmark as I hoped they would score. France are not the same team they were years ago. Will catch the Croatia v Iceland game tonight as I think that game will be better than the Nigeria v Argentine. Argentina were once mighty. How the mighty fall eh?

France v Denmark was so awful I gave up at half time (apparently there were boos at full time) and watched the other game instead which was a decent tempo. Both Peru and Australia need to stick at it as they have potential and play the game in a good spirit. I was also surprised the Danes did not try and score as they could have still been in trouble had the aussies won. It filtered through that the Denmark manager had someone monitoring the other game so I guess he had a plan but it seems a very unprofessional and risky way to go about things and they get plenty of rest between games so burn out is no excuse. On that form neither team will get past the next round.

Iceland blew a chance to get through last night with more than a few near misses and lost opportunities. Shame as they come across as a team that could be dangerous. They are out now though.

Messi & Rojo exorcise World Cup demons as Argentina progress to last 16

Messi & Rojo exorcise World Cup demons as Argentina progress to last 16Get short URL

Lionel Messi and Marcos Rojo gave Argentina the chance of a fresh World Cup start with a goal each to ensure a 2-1 win over Nigeria which saw La Albiceleste advance to the final 16 after an abject start to Russia 2018.

After recording a draw and a loss against Iceland and Croatia respectively in their first two group games, Argentina were left needing a win against Nigeria in St. Petersburg to ensure qualification to the knockout stage.

And they did just that courtesy of a first World Cup 2018 goal for captain Messi and a late winner from defender Marcos Rojo. But the South Americans did not have things all their own way.

Messi deftly took down a beautiful through ball from Ever Banega from near the halfway line on his left thigh before taking a touch and then firing right-footed past Super Eagles keeper Francis Uzoho to make it 1-0 after 14 minutes.

The goal made Messi the first and only player to score a World Cup goal as a teenager, in his twenties and in his thirties. The Barcelona star had earlier gone close but missed his penalty against Iceland in the group opener.

Argentina went into the break in front, but soon after the restart found themselves in hot water when Mascherano was penalised for wrapping his hands around Leon Balogun in the area while defending a corner.

The Nigeria midfielder collapsed into a heap, and Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir consulted VAR before awarding the spot kick, which appeared to be the right decision.

When the dust settled, Victor Moses, perhaps the coolest man in the stadium, coolly slotted the spot kick home to equalize on the night, and put Argentina’s hopes of salvaging qualification from an abject start in serious jeopardy.

Iceland eliminated despite spirited display in loss to Croatia in Rostov

26 Jun, 2018

Croatia emerged from their third match at Russia 2018 with their 100% record intact, as two second-half goals canceled out an Icelandic penalty, sending them into the knockout stages as Group D winners.

Zlatko Dalic’s side enhanced their status as one of the form teams in the World Cup, as goals from Milan Badelj and Ivan Perisic proved enough to dispatch a dangerous Iceland side.

A 76th minute penalty from Gylfi Sigurdsson, cooly dispatched into the roof of the net as if a riposte to the crucial spot kick miss against Nigeria last Friday, looked to have secured a point for Iceland before Perisic’s late strike sucked any remaining wind from the Icelandic sails.

It wasn’t easy for the Croats, however. Iceland presented themselves as a tidy, compact unit which proved difficult for their opponents - led by the mercurial Luka Modric in midfield - who were regularly frustrated as Iceland refused to relent, breaking forward themselves whenever they sensed that the Croatian defense was stretched.

We should have a virtual sweepstake Paul and choose who we `think` will win! England could go all the way if they stay focussed because they have a team that seems to work well together, but it would be silly to discount a few of the lesser ones like Germany, who have scraped through so far but have the quality and history. Will see how they fare tonight.

From what iv'e seen i fancy Brazi to win. Quite obvious as are favs or 2nd favs when i last looked but its a no bet for me as i think they need to start Firminiho over Jesus. Massive fan of Jesus and his goals scoring record is there for all to see. He has a real bright future. Bobby F is still underated prob need to play alongside him to really appreciate what he does for the team on and off the ball. Coutiniho and his still have it when teaming up. A propper link up man who you can work off. Jesus still has along way to go to be anywhere near in that department. Really open tournament and been some quality goals and we will soon be into the buisness end .

Holders Germany crash out of World Cup after South Korea claim late victory in Kazan

27 Jun, 2018

© Michael Dalder / Reuters

Germany’s World Cup defense ended with a whimper in Kazan, as two late goals from a spirited South Korea condemned Joachim Low’s men to a humiliating early exit from Russia 2018.

For the first time since 1938 Germany have failed to advance past the group stage - and they have no one to blame but themselves. A late goal, correctly awarded by VAR, from Kim Young-gwon and a 96th minute strike into Manuel Neuer’s empty net from Tottenham’s Son Heung-min, consigned the defending champions to defeat and brings their run in this calendar year to just one victory from nine matches.

In truth, they rarely threatened throughout the 90 minutes. They failed to force the South Korean goalkeeper to perform heroics, nor were attacks repelled with the aid of the Korean crossbar. Instead, Germany simply weren’t good enough.

Despite dominating possession for periods early, Germany never really took the game by the scruff of the neck. Toni Kroos, the hero against Sweden, was unable to reproduce the heroics which saved German blushes last week while Thomas Muller, so often team’s talisman, paid the price for his drop in form by starting the match on the bench.

Sweden 3-0 Mexico: Swedes stun sloppy Mexicans to win Group F

27 Jun, 2018

Sweden pulled off a stunning 3-0 win over Mexico in Ekaterinburg to pull off a surprise upset in Group F. The Swedes advanced to the last 16 in first place alongside Mexico, with Germany eliminated.

A last-gasp effort from South Korea, which saw them score two stoppage-time goals in the game’s other match with World Cup holders Germany, meant that despite losing, Mexico also qualified for the tournament's knockout stages.

A tremendous second half rally from Sweden saw the team record a 3-0 win courtesy of goals from Ludwig Augustinsson, Andreas Granqvist from the penalty spot, and then an own goal from Edson Alvarez to seal a shock victory against perhaps the strongest team in the group.

In the first 45, Mexico found it difficult to find a way past a compact Sweden side, a little and large battle up front between Javier chicharito Hernandez and Adreas Granqvist hugely contributing to a goalless first half.

When Sweden did push forward, Hernandez was accused of handling in the area, but protests were waved away by the referee, cue apoplectic reactions from Sweden coach Janne Andersson and talisman Sebastien Larsson.

Franciso Ochoa tipped over from Marcus Berg at close range from the resulting corner. Mexico were careful in their build up going forward, but ultimately their end product lacked.

Brazil breeze into last 16 with 2-0 win as Serbia knocked out

27 Jun, 2018

Brazil eased into the World Cup knockout stages thanks to a 2-0 win over Serbia in Moscow, which secured the five-time winners top spot in Group E and consigned the Serbs to an early exit from Russia.

Goals in either half from Paulinho and Thiago Silva were enough to send Brazil through, as they set up a last 16 clash against Mexico despite not being at their fluent best.

Having seen a seismic shock earlier in the day when Germany went out following a 2-0 defeat to South Korea, Brazil ensured they didn’t suffer the same fate with an ultimately comfortable win at Spartak Stadium.

Tite’s team went into the game knowing a draw would be enough to see them through, while the Serbs needed a win to guarantee progression for them to the last 16 in Russia.

The opening exchanges displayed the contrasting styles on show in Moscow: Brazil with intricate passing and flicks, Serbia with a blunt directness that aimed to utilize the power of Aleksandar Mitrovic and pace of Dusan Tadic.
Brazil initially looked as if they would flatter to deceive again, with Neymar in particular appearing easy on the eye but with a distinct lack of cutting edge.
For Serbia, Mitrovic was a direct force up front, while Tadic picked up where he left off against Switzerland, being a threat down the right.

Costa Rica draw enough to send Swiss through to knockout stages

27 Jun, 2018

Switzerland secured their passage to the second round of the World Cup but life wasn’t made easy for them by a plucky Costa Rica side who plundered their first goal and point at Russia 2018.

Costa Rica had the Swiss sweating early, striking the woodwork twice in the early stages of the game but it would be Switzerland who had the scoreboard ticking over first when Blerim Dzemaili powered home from close range after good work from Embolo.

The strike from the Swiss midfielder came against the run of play, with Joel Campbell and Bryan Ruiz proving to be a thorn in Swiss sides and it was clear that this Costa Rican side were determined to end their World Cup on a high note.

They would get the goal that their endeavor deserved on 56 minutes, when 6 ft 5 in defender Kendall Watson sent a glancing header past Yann Sommer from a Joel Campbell corner. The Swiss complained that Watson was perhaps a little vigorous with one of their defenders as they tangled for the ball, but the goal was given and Costa Rica had their first strike of Russia 2018.

The Swiss didn’t panic, knowing that as things stood elsewhere in the group a draw would be sufficient to secure qualification but they appeared to have made sure of things when Drmic deftly placed a first-time shot into Keylor Navas’ left-hand corner from a superb Zakaria cross.

THU 28 JUN 2018 WORLD CUP - GROUP G
19:00
Venue: Kaliningrad Stadium
World Cup 2018: England v Belgium

How to watch:
6.15pm ITV-1

TEAM NEWS
Both England and Belgium are assured of their place in the last 16, and are expected to make a number of changes for their final Group G game.

Three Lions midfielder Dele Alli, who suffered a muscle problem against Tunisia, trained on Wednesday but is unlikely to be risked.

Marcus Rashford and Gary Cahill could earn recalls, and Eric Dier will start.

Kevin de Bruyne, Thomas Meunier and Jan Vertonghen are a booking away from a ban and unlikely to play for Belgium.

Striker Romelu Lukaku has been ruled out, Dries Mertens also has an ankle issue while captain Eden Hazard has been nursing a calf problem.

OVERVIEW
Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini says the denouement to Group G between Belgium and England will be a "strange game", and it certainly feels like it has a surreal edge to it.

With both sides already qualified, and level on points, goal difference and goals scored, their disciplinary records will decide who finishes top of the group if they draw in Kaliningrad. Should they still be level on that factor, the rare sight of the drawing of lots will take place to determine who finishes top.

There has been much debate in the media, pubs, offices and living rooms across England about whether Gareth Southgate's side would actually be better off finishing second rather than top as it could see them avoid a quarter-final against Brazil.

Belgium 1-0 England: Devil in the detail as Three Lions halted by brilliant Belgian Januzaj
28 Jun, 2018 An almost apathetic Belgium halted England’s claim for top spot in Group G thanks to a moment of brilliance from Adnan Januzaj that snatched first place and set up a last 16 meeting with Japan in Rostov.

Both sides made wholesale changes from their previous starting lineups; England manager Gareth Southgate brought in nine new faces from the side that ensured qualification with a 6-1 rout over Panama, including switching Marcus Rashford for skipper Harry Kane.

Belgium were also without their main goal scoring threat as Romelu Lukaku made way for Michy Batshuayi. A draw would have seen England advance from having begun the day in top spot by virtue of having accumulated one fewer yellow card than Belgium in the fair play standings.

I think Tuesday`s game will tell us a lot Paul. Meaning, whether Mr Southgate`s plan was to lose last night. Sweden have always been a decent side and I wasn`t surprised to see them beat Mexico. Things are hotting up, but would be a shame if England were knocked out before landing a chance to get to the semi`s.

‘We saw shortcomings of England squad’ – Schmeichel on Three Lions’ defeat to Belgium
28 Jun, 2018

Peter Schmeichel says England’s defeat to Belgium in their final World Cup Group G game has exposed the difference in the depths of strength in the two squads as they move on to the knockout stages in Russia.

Belgium edged a 1-0 win in Kaliningrad to book top spot in the group on nine points, setting up a last 16 meeting with Japan in Rostov-on-Don. For England it was a first defeat at Russia 2018, and sends them on to a last 16 encounter with a dangerous Colombian team in Moscow.

Going into the game in Kaliningrad, both Gareth Southgate and Roberto Martinez made wholesale changes to their respective teams, safe in the knowledge that passage to the knockout stages was secure.

In the end the game was settled by a stunning second-half goal from Adnan Januzaj – and goalkeeping great Schmeichel said the fact that Belgium could call on such class from a second-string player bodes well for them moving on in Russia.

For Southgate, in contrast, the struggles of those who came in against Belgium highlight the limitations beyond England’s starting 11.
