:woohoo: Anyone else still wondering what happened last night?!!!!!! I was sat watching that last Colombian player taking the final penalty and knew England`s progression could be halted there and then. England DESERVED to go through given the dirty game Colombia were playing. It would have left a sour taste in the mouth had they won. Really pleased for the England team in that respect. Onwards now to play Sweden, who I`ve always thought were a decent side, even without the wonderful Henrik Larsson from Celtic all those years ago!

Well It sure was an "Edge of your seat" Game, Colombia were awafall so many fowls, And were they going
for the record in Yellow Cards awarded ?
England did well and won there first ever penalty World Cup shoot out,
Next up Sweden.

Watching last night's game was the usual nerve-wracking experience. At the beginning of the game I must admit I didn't expect much, going by England's poor performance in the knockout rounds in previous competitions, and expected another frustrating game. And hell it was a frustrating game! The more tricks the Colombians played the more incenced I became. The subtle little head into Henderson's chin, the scuffing of the penalty spot before Kane took his penalty were probably the 2 most notable. Give them their due, most of the England team didn't rise to all the provocation they were getting, though Henderson was silly to get booked when the Colombians were remonstrating with the referee over the penalty... He should have taken note of Kane and just walked away from the situation.

The 1-0 advantage to England was nowhere near enough, and it seemed almost inevitable when Colombia equalised right at the death. Again a few England players didn't turn up. I heard that idiot Danny Murphy saying Sterling had one of his best matches, as he was being substituted. I hardly recall seeing Sterling doing anything in the 2nd half! Alli too was rather anonymous. Some players had an excellent game, Kane of course leading by example. Trippier played well, as did Maguire, and you have to admire Pickford for playing so well after he'd been so heavily criticised over past performances.

When it came to the penalty shootout I almost didn't watch, thanks to our dismal record over the years in shootouts. And when Henderson's penalty was saved I thought "Here we go again..." But... the next Colombian hitting the bar and then Pickford's great save I began to think the almost impossible could happen. Then I saw Dier walk up and I was full of dread once again... I thought it strange that Vardy wasn't in the first 5 penalty takers. But, to his credit Dier put away his penalty and we WON!!! Great stuff, let's just hope we play better against Sweden, because let's face it we weren't at our best against a dismal cheating Colombian side and Sweden will be a much bigger test.

I got back online just in time for yesterdays games having been peed off not to see France finally play well - if they are hitting form I still make them favourites but dead right I saw plenty of problems in that defence in the first 3 games which won't have all just cleared up.

Colombia's problem is that they cannot play without Rodriguez but they should be able to as they have plenty of decent players and he has been poor in this tournament anyway - clearly the guy who makes them tick though. You can't just let a team walk over you when they start to mix it but it is a fine line sometimes and the ref was under intense pressure. I thought he did well to make 5 bookings but they got away with so much more that they won't have many admirers left. The more I see Maguire, the more I rate him, motm imho. Pickford's penalty save was a belter and Vardy finally looked to be fitting in which could be great timing as more extra time is highly likely. Also agree re: Alli and Sterling and they shouldn't both be in the team together on current form. Strange though because Walker doesn't look ideal in that position and Dyer just gives me kittens BUT Southgate is getting the results with this set up.

No idea who will win against the Swedes but looking forward to see how well Kane does against the huge Grandqvist.

Brazil v Belgium: Stakes couldn’t be higher between two top-ranked sides remaining in the World Cup

6 Jul, 2018

With champions Germany consigned to the World Cup scrapheap, the meeting between 2nd ranked Brazil and 3rd ranked Belgium is a mouth-watering prospect for football fans no matter who you are rooting for.

On paper there aren’t many better match-ups possible in the World Cup than this one. Each side is blessed with attacking flair, creativity in the middle of the park and a defense which is just porous enough to keep things interesting.

With so much talent on display on both sides one suspects that it is only a matter of time before both goalkeepers, Alisson for Brazil and Courtois for Belgium, are called into action. Eden Hazard, Belgium’s captain and talisman, holds a skeleton key for practically every backline he faces while Neymar’s talent speaks for itself, though he does tend move in and out of games as referee decisions go for or against him.

Brazil 1-2 Belgium: Brilliant Belgians sweep past Samba Boys to book World Cup semi-final spot
6 Jul, 2018 19:53

Belgium produced a blistering display to knock out five-time winners Brazil and book a World Cup semi-final spot against France.

The Belgians ran out 2-1 winners in a frantic encounter in Kazan thanks to two first-half goals, the opener coming from a 13th-minute Fernandinho own goal before Kevin De Bruyne rifled home a second from the edge of the box on the half-hour mark. Substitute Renato Augusto pulled a goal back for Brazil with a 75th-minute header to set up a thrilling end to the game, but Belgium held on as worthy winners to set up a semi-final against France, who earlier saw off Uruguay in their quarter-final.

Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’ had largely failed to live up to their tag with disappointing quarter-final exits at their last two major tournaments, but now have a golden chance at glory in Russia after beating a Brazil team that had largely flattered to deceive.

The Brazilians had made largely untroubled progress through the group stages before easing past Mexico in the last 16, but came up against an inspired Belgium who were in Kazan courtesy of stunning comeback win against Japan in their last game.

The opening stages saw an intensity that would set the pace for the remainder of the game, as Brazil pressed high up the pitch while Belgium initially saw more of the ball.

England WON!!!!! :woohoo: On to tonight now to see whether Russia or Croatia will play England on Wednesday. I just about fell asleep during the first half of the England game as things got off to a slow start and in my opinion, they lost a few good chances in the first half and could easily have been 2-0 ahead in the first half. Pickford is a hero. Without his keen eye, England would have been in some trouble. I`ll bet his price tag has just gone up in value!

England overpower limited Sweden to return to World Cup semis for first time since 1990

7 Jul, 2018

For all the nerves of a nation that flipped from optimism to expectation overnight, it was comfortable. Two textbook English headers secured the Three Lions a place in the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 28 years.

Both sides had started out the match with misplaced passes and clumsy touches befitting two overachievers finally told of the stakes at play, but by the end of the 90 minutes in Samara, England threatened to turn the historically difficult match-up into a humiliation. On the biggest stage, the young Lions did not crack along the fault lines of their previously fragile national psyche. Perhaps they were barely aware of it.

A bullet header from Harry Maguire off a corner - the eighth set piece goal the team scored, far more than anyone else in Russia - prized open a Sweden team that had hoped to sit back for the entire game. The second-half effort by Dele Alli, who became England's second-youngest World Cup scorer, from a looping one-time cross by Jesse Lingard, sealed the result.

Calm heroics from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford ensured that Sweden would not convert from their handful of bright passages of attacking play, and spared him a repeat of the nail-biting finish and penalty pressure of England's last win against Colombia. Even a pathologically wasteful performance from Raheem Sterling, the creator and destroyer of the team's most promising moves, but significantly not involved in either goal, could not take off the sheen.

Deprived of their talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the first tournament since 2002, Sweden showed the possibilities and the limits of collectivism with a performance in which they lacked the quality to persistently trouble the English, or even set up a positional attack. They will still cherish their own best placing in the World Cup since 1994.

Would be good to see England get to the final even if they lost. But that`s throwing in the towel too early! They will definitely need to sharpen up in the first half of the game now because these two sides won`t allow any slack.

Croatia 2-1 England (AET) : Cool Croatia stun England in extra time to book first-ever final berth

11 Jul, 2018 20:37

© Darren Staples / Reuters

Croatia sensationally cemented their first-ever World Cup final with a dramatic 2-1 extra time win over a gallant England side at Luzhniki Stadium in the Russian capital on Wednesday.

A match that became a long battle between two teams displaying warrior spirit began with a Kieran Trippier free-kick within the first five minutes. That goal was cancelled out by a second half Ivan Perisic equalizer to ensure the sides were tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

In the end a goal from striker Mario Mandzukic in the second half of extra time provided the agonizing difference that booked Croatia a first-ever World Cup final place, in which they will meet a formidable-looking ‘Les Bleus’ at the same stadium on Sunday.

Given the weight of the game, which would bring a first ever final for Croatia and a first final in over 50 years for England should they win, there would be some expected early nerves for either side in the Russian capital.

England, however, who have been praised for their youthful side showing little to no fear during the biggest football showpiece on earth, showed no such early worries and attacked from the off.

After just a few minutes, Jesse Lingard showed immense flair in pirouetting over the ball before passing to Dele Alli, who was bundled over by Croatia captain Luka Modric around 20 yards out. Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir had no doubts in ordering a free-kick.

Up stepped a Kieran Trippier, so confident and steady he had been in all England’s games up until that point. That sureness never wavered and the 27-year-old curled beautifully into the top right-hand corner to leave Danijel Subasic, whom many have singled out as the best goalkeeper in the tournament so far, no chance although the Croatian stopper was at full stretch.

The goal was England’s 12th at the World Cup – more than by any other England side at a major tournament. First blood to the Three Lions.

The set piece goal may have come as a shock to most, as it did not involve the head of Harry Maguire or John Stones, and nor was it a penalty. But minutes later and Maguire, England’s center back of the moment, got his head to two corners in quick succession, first from Ashley Young from the left and then Tipper from the right to restore some normality.

Dejan Lovren showed frustration when he brought down Kane near the center circle. Moments later a weak Subasic clearance dropped to Raheem Sterling who played through captain Harry Kane, but he was well offside. The flag went up but the England skipper dragged his effort wide anyway.

England didn’t finish game off in first half, paid the price – Mourinho on loss to Croatia
11 Jul, 2018 22:05
Jose Mourinho says that England must be “proud” of their World Cup run, but criticized the Three Lions for not taking the chance to pull away, before losing control of the game.

“If I was a bit naïve, if I didn’t have the experience I have in football, I would have come in at half time and said the job is done. But it was not done,” said Mourinho, RT’s World Cup expert, referring to the 1-0 score at the time and the number of chances presented to the English attackers in the opening half.

But Mourinho predicted that the second half would be more precarious.

“When the game was easy for England, the second goal didn’t come, and when Croatia scored their equalizer, they received a big dose of confidence, and the game changed completely. By the end, Croatia deserved it – by the end you could see it from the number of shots, from the ball possession numbers, which changed dramatically,” said the Portuguese manager.

My own thoughts exactly. England lost the game in the first half by not racing away with at least TWO goals, from the three chances they had. They showed a touch of class but fell short of Group 1 company sadly.

Belgium 2-0 England: Best-ever Belgians seal World Cup 3rd place with win over toothless Three Lions

14 Jul, 2018

Belgium clinched their best-ever World Cup finish of 3rd place at the Russia 2018 tournament with a 2-0 win over a less than emphatic England side in St. Petersburg on Saturday.

Belgium eased to a 2-0 win against an England side lacking any firepower in St. Petersburg Stadium, netting two goals in the first ten and last ten minutes from Thomas Meunier and captain Eden Hazard respectively, both of whom benefited greatly from the sublime Kevin De Bruyne in central midfield.

For England it was a repeat of 28 years previously as they failed to better their fourth place finish at Italia ‘90, which ominously also followed a semifinal loss after normal time. With the defeat, Gareth Southgate’s men also let slip the chance to record a best World Cup finish since they won the competition in 1966.

Southgate, whose name had been murmured as a possible candidate to be seen on the Queen’s birthday honors list, made wholesale changes to the side that lost to Croatia three days ago, perhaps understandable for a side needing to recover from a draining and at times exasperating match.

That meant for the second time in the tournament, a weakened England side would meet Belgium and this time, there would be no revenge, just a repeat of the Group G defeat in Kaliningrad. Neither side would have wanted to play in this game, but neither would have wanted to lose either.

France 4-2 Croatia - Les Bleus ease past courageous Croatia to World Cup victory in Moscow

15 Jul, 2018

A rampant France clinched their second World Cup title with a 4-2 victory in the Russia 2018 final over plucky underdogs Croatia at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium in a match that saw class and controversy in equal measure.

It was Les Bleus who opened the scoring when Antoine Griezmann’s 18th-minute free kick to the back post was guided into his own net by a rising Mario Mandzukic, the man who scored the goal to get Croatia into the final match.

Ten minutes later and Croatia were level when the reliable Ivan Perisic slotted home from just inside the box. However, a Griezmann penalty given through a VAR decision ensured France went into the break ahead.

The second half saw two screamers in quick succession from Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe that both cued celebrations from the bench, before a nightmare blunder from Hugo Lloris allowed Mandzukic to redeem his earlier error.

Emotional Croatian leader Grabar-Kitarovic consoles Modric after World Cup final defeat

15 Jul, 2018

Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic was seen offering words of support to team captain Luka Modric after their nation suffered World Cup final agony in Moscow, losing 4-2 to France.

France 4-2 Croatia - Les Bleus ease past courageous Croatia to World Cup victory in Moscow

Grabar-Kitarovic was among the numerous dignitaries in attendance to watch football’s showpiece event at Luzhniki Stadium in the Russian capital, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and French leader Emmanuel Macron.

France ran out 4-2 winners thanks to an own goal from Mario Mandzukic, a penalty from Antoine Griezmann, and second-half goals from Paul Pogba and teenage star Kylian Mbappe, although Ivan Perisic and Mandzukic got on the scoresheet in reply.

It was Croatia’s first-ever run to the final, and the team captured the hearts of its nation as well as millions of others around the world with its spirited performances and no shortage of skill in Russia.

Referee 'stole' game from 'people's champions' Croatia with penalty decision - Schmeichel

15 Jul, 2018

Peter Schmeichel proclaimed Croatia his team of the tournament, and blamed referee Nestor Pitana for "ruining" the game by awarding France a VAR-reviewed penalty near the end of the first half with the scores tied at 1-1.

“In a World Cup Final it is a big moment, and the referee stole that moment. It deflated them. All the bravura, all the extra energy, everything they showed in the previous three comeback games disappeared,” said Schmeichel. "This is exactly what this final did not deserve."

Chasing the game, Croatia went a further two goals behind, before getting one back, with the game finishing 4-2 to Les Bleus.

Schmeichel, who has followed every game at the tournament as RT's football expert, said that France "deserved" their win, but the Balkan upstarts overachieved more than any others at Russia 2018.

“This is my personal award: Croatia won the people’s award. They inspired us all and showed that you can dig deep and get results," said Schmeichel. Croatia is the smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup final since Uruguay in 1950, but has produced a spate of outstanding individuals, led by Luka Modric, who was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the World Cup.
