Theresa May’s government is accused of making justice available to only ‘the privileged few’

Theresa May’s government is accused of making justice available to only ‘the privileged few’UK

New figures show that access to justice is increasingly being limited to the rich. Over the last five years, government figures show that the number of legal aid providers in England and Wales has dropped by 20%. And this means that thanks to Conservative government cuts, there are thousands of people who can no longer access justice for issues such as housing, domestic abuse, benefit appeals and immigration cases.

Cuts, cuts and more cuts

The Legal Aid Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act (Laspo) came into force in 2012. Its aim was to cut £350m from the legal aid bill. Five years later and Laspo is having an impact. Because the fall in legal aid providers corresponds with the introduction of the Act.

And the cuts led Britain’s most senior judge, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, to state in 2016 that:

our justice system has become unaffordable to most.

I find it odd that it's taken since 2011 for anyone to come to this conclusion. Legal fees are prohibitively high, cutting legal aid was always going to lead to this by design

Welfare advice is difficult to find these days and in many towns, CAB offices are overburdened by people asking for advice. I`m luck I have a nearby office and have used them before and my GP is sympathetic to where I am based on recent events, but it`s knowing where to turn when your world falls down around you.

My CAB office is useless, the sum total of their advice is to refer you to welfare rights for my county, who then randomly assign you an advisor which so far in 3 appeals has never yet been the one IN my town, which means no face to face appointments and they can't attend appeals with you as an advocate. So for someone like me for whom social interaction is an impossibility without a familiar person as "backup" for wont of a better word I have no choice but to request a paper based appeal which fail more often than not

This suits the TORYS right up to their over flowing bank accounts.

The rich get richer so more likely to pay/afford their legal fees unlike the other 99% ers and others on tax credits.

Price the vulnerable out of a legal market place where they can no longer afford to take action against the 1% ers.
Guess they were getting shafted in legal cases against the dwp etc and had enough of it ,now their shafting us in more ways than one if and when they can.

Tribunals are still a cheaper way of fighting back for those who dare to go against this farcical system called welfare.
