Government’s flagship programme to help jobless young people has no idea where 15,000 people have gone because it keeps no records
Exclusive: Youth Obligation branded a 'dead duck' after minister admits he has no idea if it is helping youngsters into work - because no data is kept

Thousands of jobless young people are feared to have dropped off a flagship government scheme without finding work or training and without any information on their subsequent movements.

Ministers are facing accusations that the Youth Obligation programme is a “dead duck” after admitting they have no idea if it is helping youngsters into work because no data is kept.

A total of 24,600 have joined the programme since its launch last year, but only 9,300 remain – which means 15,300 youngsters have left, with no information available about what they are doing now.

Nearly half a million ‘hidden’ young people left without state help
There is also growing alarm that Youth Obligation is operating in only a few parts of the country, leaving jobless youngsters elsewhere with no focused government support.

Just £9.4m was spent on the scheme in 2017-18, compared with around £500m spent on the Work Programme which preceded it, albeit for all age groups.

Stephen Timms, a Labour MP who uncovered the failure to monitor the scheme, told The Independent: “It is shocking, the government is failing to address a serious problem.

“It is extraordinarily negligent not to collect the data for the programme. Without it, the government will have no idea if it is succeeding or failing.”

Maybe they are in a 'labour' camp (think empty prisons).

I wonder then, why this isn`t splashed all over the news channels asking the question, where have all our young people gone who were signed up to this mess? No doubt a Tory spokesperson would be rushed out to comment that - `We as a government spend tax payers money on necessary programmes to educate and help the long term unemployed to prevent them from having large TV`s and working on the side"....

Then the select committee should be summoned to gather these so called ministers together to ask where their statistics are and who is accountable for them? There should be an audit trail for ALL accountable schemes and programmes and a proper `head count` of everyone ON them and their outcomes. Otherwise how can they say they have been (a) worthwhile and (b) money well spent?

I Don't think This lot have a clue what they are doing, In this madness to "Save Money" They will in fact be spending millions of pounds more
to repair their own screw ups.
This is just one story that has come to light (But has avoided Tory owned mainstream media)
I wonder how many more expensive screw ups that have not come to light. :(

It`s all very well orchestrated Paul. They can do as they please and when questioned about it, will always have an answer or twist their answers to make people believe they are all above board. Remember, the tories are the party of U-turns and have just ditched plans to build five new women`s prisons in favour of the cheaper option of opening centres to `get them into work and to rehabilitate` them. I thought that`s what prisons were supposed to do? Yet they will find a few more billion for defence that the UK either doesn`t need or will ever use.
