Crippling alcohol price laws rolled out TODAY with booze costs to SOAR
CAMPAIGNERS in England are calling on the government to introduce minimum unit prices for alcohol similar to those taking effect in Scotland today.

By Charlotte Ikonen / Published 1st May 2018

A new 50p-per-unit rate north of the border means a three-litre bottle of Frosty Jacks white cider will cost more than £11 – while one can be picked up for a little as £3.69 in an English branch of Iceland.

Scotland hopes the move will cut alcohol-related deaths and illnesses, and lead to a drop in drink-fuelled anti-social behaviour.

But, critics of the policy argue it is another tax levied on poorer sections of society and say alcoholics will still find ways to get the money they need to buy booze.

Campaigners say more than 1,000 lives could be saved if England replicates Scotland’s new law.

The Alcohol Health Alliance UK (AHA), a group of more than 50 medical organisations including the British Medical Association, Royal College of GPs and Alcohol Concern, launched an intervention with the Children’s Society and homelessness charity Thames Reach on Tuesday.

Minimum pricing would not affect the price of most booze in bars or pubs, as it is usually sold for more than 50p a unit.

The policy targets off-licence and supermarket alcohol, especially super-strength lagers and white cider popular with street drinkers, the young and the vulnerable, the AHA argues.

But don't you think it will see a rise in the old booze cruiser to the Continent Paul-UB40?

Also do you recon there will be a rise in the so-called "Bath-tub gin", which happend during the prohibition-era? Which if this stealth tax is meant to promote a healthy lifestyle? And yet could cause more health problems, from this type of unregulated alcohol?

Still on the bright side Paul-UB40, you could have a booming business if you set it up right with you home brew....

Also this price rise will have an effect on the brewery’s and there suppliers no doubt that will cause jobs losses and down turn in taxes? :(

As well as that these people with addictions will just find a cheaper whether legal or illegal to satisfy themselves. Also it is not addressing the problem of why they are binge drinking. The alcohol prices in some EU countries are cheaper than here in the UK yet they don’t have a binge-drinking problem? So taxing the stuff isn’t addressing the problem?

has raising the price of fags stopped people smoking?has raising car tax,insurance,petrol/diesel etc reduced the amount of cars on the road?has making weed illegal stopped millions of people smoking it? i think not, raising prices dont solve anything it's the tories that drive people to get off their faces on drink and drugs so get shut of them and people will feel a sense of hope again and hopefully wont feel the need to seek comfort in booze etc

Here's an article that paints a similar picture Evander. That price rises change anything to a greater extent, still it look like they are doing something. :(

And also where will extra money go on drink awareness courses????

When I saw this on the BBC Scotland news the other night, I couldn`t help thinking that people who do have an alcohol problem or just like a drink generally will just switch to cheap wine? I`m sure I heard them saying the price rises wouldn`t affect wine and a few other beverages? I don`t drink, don`t smoke and don`t drive so these rises won`t affect me personally, but I do worry that government policies never truly stop the harm they are supposed to prevent.

There was a great response to this announcement from one of the callers on R5L along the lines of: if the govt are so concerned about the state of public health then what they should be doing is making healthy food more affordable.
