Automation will lead big tech firms to endorse government-supplied wages
By ANDREW KEEN

Universal basic income (UBI) is a 500-year-old idea that will finally go mainstream in 2018. Invented by Sir Thomas More in Utopia, his 1516 "no place" imagining of the perfect society, UBI is the idea that the government should provide all its citizens with a living wage, irrespective of whether they work or not. Over the past 500 years, UBI is an idea that has been revisited many times - most notably in the mid-19th century by Karl Marx, who imagined a post-capitalist industrial economy of such collective wealth that it would leave all of us free to "hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening and criticise after dinner".

But, for all its political seductiveness, UBI has never really convinced anyone except radical idealists such as More and Marx. So why is this rather kooky 500-year-old idea about to go mainstream?

The answer, as with everything else these days, is smart technology. Known broadly as artificial intelligence, it is about to change the 21st-century world as radically as industrial technology changed the 19th-century world. Most troubling is that the smart machine is about to replace human labour in every area - from manual to highly skilled jobs such as medicine, law and teaching. Over the next quarter of a century, it will make many of us, perhaps even most of us, redundant.

I wish someone would tell the Tory government this as they now have a system that controls lives called Universal Credit. They must have missed the boat because saving billions on an IT system like UC could have been better spent on an automated pay out for every citizen at the flick of a switch. A bit like a cashline machine where you just contacted an automated service to give your details and received a number to get your payment. Job done. Everyone`s a winner....sadly, we live in a controlled society that those in power seem to believe driving their citizens to despair is a better way.

The deluded TORY party are going to wake up and i feel real soon to find their paying people to go to work along with those who arent.

Its only their bloody mindedness that is forcing people into part time temp/perm jobs on UC and that is going to fail horrendously as they see the majority of those wage packets are so low tax receipts will be non existence and hence major problem.I predict the next 2 -3 years to be absolute hell and joke centre staff should also be aware that they soon could be on this side of the table. :)

Sorry, I'll definitely be in a minority, but I think UBI is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

The long term solution is that people at one point get back to owning their own land. The land was, for our ancestors, their universal basic income.

Just out of curiosity Miguel, where did your ancestors come from?

In this country, what we now call the UK, there was no period in history when the mass of the people owned any land.

Before capitalism, circa 1500s, there was feudalism, when the system was that land barons owned the land at the discretion or whim of the monarch so long as they swore fealty and paid their dues to said monarch.

The land barons apportioned their land to their flunkies, again so long as they swore fealty and paid their dues to said land baron.

So on down the hierarchical scale to the serf, whose apportionment, if he held any, could not be sub-divided any further. Not only did the serf have no claim to property, any claim he may think he had to merely exist was at the whim of any one of those who were superior to him in the hierarchical chain.

We have come a long way since those days. Not least because our forefathers fought and died for the freedoms and rights, such as they are, we now enjoy.

I believe that it is an affront to the memory and the courage of our forefathers not to resist with every fibre of our body any attempt to have us return to such systems. The idea behind the Universal Jobmatch system of dictating and controlling and monitoring the activities and of repealing rights and freedoms of the weak, poor, and less fortunate by stealth is a retrograde step, designed to create a class of people in this country, the undeserving poor, whose very existence is to be considered a burden.

I admire and would encourage anyone who resists such a system. But for them, we are going to be in deep shit when they come for us, and rest assured they will. Standing by when they come for others is not an option, who then will be there to stand by you?.

I like the idea of a UBI and would welcome such a policy. But with all the trials going on in the EU aswell as parts of the UK, I fear it`s a whimsical experiment set up to fail because those implementing it will suggest it would be far too costly, or if not they, the press and those not in favour of helping their fellow man/woman to exist on a free ride or they will suggest those who got the UBI payments never bothered to do anything to fulfill their lives or volunteer.

I`ve always tried hard to understand why we all have to `work` to survive? I don`t mean living off the land to farm or provide our own existence as we had to do centuries ago, but why mankind as a whole cannot share the earths resources to all equally and rid us all of this controlling system we now live under. The planet is already suffering from big industry and pollution/globalwarming, yet if we unilised green energy, stopped en-mass from playing this capatalist game and stopped to look at the alternatives, I think we would all be better off.

I`ve woken up from my dream now......

Sorry, but what an utter load of cobblers. I don't know about UBI being part of the problem, but private property rights certainly are.
The land was, for our ancestors, their universal basic income.

Nonsense, for the reasons Benefit Bolshie said.
