The DWP’s most controversial policy is now under scrutiny by a top government committee
JUNE 22ND, 2018 Steve Topple

The Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) most controversial policy is now being scrutinised by an independent government committee.

The DWP: under the spotlight
The move, announced late on Friday 22 June, will see Universal Credit under the spotlight; specifically its legislation and the “potential impact on claimants”. But there’s a positive catch: the committee has opened up a consultation on it – and anyone can give evidence.

The Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC) has announced a two-month consultation into Universal Credit. The committee, independent of the DWP, is specifically looking at the plans to move people on so-called “legacy benefits” onto the new system. These are the existing benefits, like Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), which people currently claim.

Studying the impact
The committee says it’s doing this after it ‘scrutinised’ the DWP’s draft legislation on the transition of legacy benefits, and concluded that:

The task of safely moving around 3 million claimants (in around 2 million households) from legacy benefits to Universal Credit raises important questions about the delivery challenge facing the department and the potential impact on claimants.

SSAC has therefore decided to examine this draft legislation, and the impacts that flow from it, in more detail.

It`s shocking that a huge department like DWP can happily ride roughshod over claimants when they either know they are not abiding by law, or openly flouring those laws. Either way, they are not APPLYING the law properly and openly getting away with criminal activity under the guise of sanctions because they say it is `protecting the tax payer`. More like USING the tax payer as their excuse to keep this nice little bandwagon going without anyone blinking. Which is why we should all fight any injustices by never accepting a sanction believing we are the ones causing it. Always question everything.

I hope that any individual or family seriously affected by this takes the govt for negligence but more importantly can somehow get their lives back together. I know from painful experience the impact having your benefits reduced or even stopped completely without notice can have. They couldn't give a crap if you are volunteering for a worthwhile cause at the time either. In the long run a more accountable system would save the taxpayer money and the nation from embarrassment. Unfortunately that requires a level of common sense beyond the comprehension of these overpaid bloody minded dimwits. Disgraceful!

At the Moment European Law to an extent keeps the more extreme plans of the Tory Government in check,
But What after the UK Leaves the EU ?
Work Directives will no longer apply, Minimum Wages and Terms of employment will be lost.
I can see this Country going back 100 years, with poverty now only seen in the 3rd world, That the UK is on
"Fast Track" to become a member of.

I'll have to agree with you there. My genuine fear concerns the removal of The Human Rights legislation. It's a fire wall at the moment, but once that goes, God help us all. Brexit seems to be something of a ruse in my view. I can see the establishment cherry picking the EU legislation they want to better their positions, but also remove legislation that creates a barrier or stumbling block to hold the government's actions to account through the Implementation of far more draconian/malevolent policy in the future.
