The director general of Universal Credit – the flagship policy of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) – is facing a monumental backlash for his defence of the policy.
No comparison

The DWP appointed Neil Couling as the director general of Universal Credit in 2014. Since then, he has overseen the policy’s implementation. On 8 August, he tweeted:

Neil Couling @NeilCouling
Without the context of the experience of claimants in the legacy system, provided in this answer, it is possible from the reference at para 2.11 of the NAO report, to infer wrongly that UC is causing hardship. Hopefully this answer clears up any confusion www.parliament.uk/business/publications/written-questions-answers-statements/written-question/Lords/2018-07-19/HL9725/

Let's face it, he had to make a response following the NAO report and this is precisely the type of denial we have become used to and should expect. I would worry if they actually seemed to be caring. The only way is for UC to crash and that is probably what it was designed to do once all the support mechanisms of the legacy systems have been removed. Then they can gleefully celebrate obliterating the welfare state. All will be peaceful and harmonious with no unemployment (in Noddyland where Couling obviously lives).
