Has he contacted his jobcentre about this? Ask him to physically go there. Phoning would probably be useless.

I can see more of the sorts of problem your son is having once UC is rolled out all over the country.

Under Universal Credit, I don`t think people `sign on` using any pad now, they are allocated a day/time to `meet` their work coach to discuss their jobsearch and other such things. The UC journal is supposed to flag up questions/answers to a work coach but some say replies are not always immediate.

I`ve recently read that if making a new claim for UC, it`s better to do this at the beginning to middle of a month, rather than near the end of the month but I`m guessing this is to do with payments and making sure they are paid on that day and not messed up if the `pay in` date clashes with the end of one month and the beginning of another. Something to bare in mind.

i am on jsa ,but have to go to group sign on meetings , which is a pain, would i be better asking to go on universal credit, that way i would not have to visit the joke center every two weeks, but if i changed other to uc would i have to wait 5 weeks before a payment.

It`s not a question I can answer easily london and better coming from those who are already on UC. Given many people who are on JSA like yourself prefer that option, I`m not sure asking for the switch would be a good move. I`m not sure I would base my thinking around UC not involving group sessions but could likely involve your work coach actually asking you in weekly or fortnightly, as I know this can be the case, while others will say they are not tasked with attending so often. I`m sure this is a case by case option for work coaches on the basis of who requires the more `intense` help....as they put it.

It`s true that there is no `signing` with UC, but I can think of other reasons not to touch it with a bargepole.

london123, have a read through this article. It`s good and gives some insight into UC. It`s on a Scottish based website but apart from the Scottish Social Fund thing, the rest will apply to you:

scottishunemployedworkers.net/universal-credit/

Within this link/article, there is also an example of a work sheet given to work coaches (you may need to use your zoon in/zoom out tool) if the font sizing is small to read.

As Comply said, on UC you don’t sign on each fortnight. You have periodical interviews with a roach and your attendance at those interviews automatically signs you on.

If I were you I would stay on JSA as long as possible. From what I hear about UC, the periodical interviews with your roach are quite gruelling and intensive—more like interrogations—where more pressure is put on you than it is on JSA to find a job or go on some workfare scheme.

I’m no expert here—Benefit Bolshie can give better advice. I’m just pointing out that it's best to play safe, and not, as they say, “jump out of the frying pan and into the fire”.

The minimal requirements for attendance at joke shop when on UC is 2 times per month.

Joke shop can make people attend more than the 2 appointments but have to refund any bus fares.

If all goes to plan, it won`t be too long anyway before we are all managed onto UC so I would wait it out until that happens. ESA claimants will be moved to UC from June/July 2019 but there has already been taken with a pinch of salt. I`m just waiting to see what happens myself.

But that’s the same amount as on JSA. My roach said that when I go on UC I won’t have to go in as many times as on JSA.

I can understand the job centre asking those who really need assistance to use a computer, or to go in for more one to one chats, but it sounds to me as if people on UC already can be summoned in on this twice monthly basis. Maybe it depends on whether your claim for UC was done when in Full Service areas or if you already use this new Verify system? I remember blackbeard posting not too long ago saying he was asked to RE-CLAIM UC again even though he had already gone through the Verify stuff online and in person at his job centre? Perhaps those who were initially made a claim for UC when their areas were only LIVE rather than FULL UC areas may find they are still applied the old two week thing? While those applying to the full service UC areas are not called in so often? Not sure if that might have any baring on this or not.

They have 'discretion ' as to how many times you can be called in on UC as with JSA they use it to piss people off.It usally begins light weight and then after a few months then comes the fun and games ;)

You might like to read this before you decide:

My understanding is that under UC Work Coaches can direct you to apply for a 1 or 2-hour-a-week job. If a Work Coach places an ad for a cleaner, claimants may have to apply. A Work Coach, your name, and a weekly calendar to fill in on his computer screen... and the sanction/bonus possibilites multiply!

Where has Benefit Bolshie gone? He could probably give us some good advice on all this new incoming information.
