The Friday night rush
How far can you get in an hour?

When your Roach starts raving on about a Job you MUST Apply for, Its worth thinking about Travel Times;
This could be an eye-opener!

Traffic jams on a Friday afternoon always seem to be the worst of the working week - as daily commuters are joined by those heading for a weekend getaway.

But how far can motorists get in an hour on a typical Friday?

And does leaving later - to avoid the worst queues - make that much of a difference?

Take a scroll through these maps - created by mapping and analytics software company Esri UK - which show driving distances from 10 of the busiest city centres

I've had this argument with roaches many times. Yeah they'll look up on travel times if you argue it's outside my travel distance, but only go by the average travel time, not taking into account that during morning/evening rush hour it'd take me much longer if I travel the only (cheapest) way they want me to, which is by bus. When my travel time was restricted to 1 hour and I was put on a course I told her it would take much longer than 1 hour, but when she looked online it stated 49 minutes. I told her yes that's probably after the rush hour but as I had to be at the course for 9am I'd hit the rush hour at the worst possible time. I live near a major motorway and all roads used by the bus route are totally full between 7-10am... But she still insisted that it fell under 1 hour so I HAD to attend or face being sanctioned....

I`ve came across unexpected road works in the past as well when making journeys I wasn`t aware of. Mainly when traveling to the City centre where I don`t tend to go very often as I live nearer a closer town where my job centre is located. So a 20 minute bus journey one way can easily turn into 45 minutes just to get to the bus station. And I`m not sure it`s reasonable for us to know about non advertised road closures or emergency water/gas leaks! We are miracle workers don`t you know...

In my experience when driving in the uk journeys estimated by Google ALWAYS take longer and those times cannot be relied upon.

Id ask any roach at joke shop why they are taking the word of a search engine as proof of, as this can be disproven when someone actually records a real journey not a bloody computerized one :)

Better still ask for bus companies comments on how long their bus journeys take if using bus.Again ive played that game also and takes a bloody age.
If joke shop had their way they wouldn't give a crap if we are stuck on a bus 3 hours each way with a colostomy bag.

Back last August I went by Coach Liverpool-South Wales, coming down the M6 was fine, But the massive Traffic Jam
on the other Lane going North stretched for over 20 miles, so that would have wrecked any and all "Estimated Times"
Joke centre are in cloud cuckoo land when it comes to Travel Times.

Going back to last Tuesday morning and knowing I had to be at the court for 9am, I left at 7am even though online it stated the bus journey would take no more than 40 minutes. Just as well I left as early as I did as the bus got caught up in a huge traffic jam (fecking roadworks would you believe) and I didn't get there until 8.45. That's something else the muppets at the jobcentre never take into consideration.

5-10 minutes in quiet periods journey to town centre. Like Tarquin says, early has to be taken into account especially if you have two buses on a morning interview allowing for connection time. Last Wednesday I had 9am appt at dentists (never again at that time as I could have done it about same on foot cutting out the detour to bus stop) and same journey took 25 minutes in this thing known (to all except the JC) as PEAK times which you would be in after getting the actual job so it is practical to do your reccie at that time is it not?

Over recent years Any and All important Appointments, Court Cases, Doctor, Dentist ect I allow plenty of time
If Walking its OK, but if using Bus or Liverpool Metro add 1 extra hour on top, As Public Transport, and the state of the roads gets worse by the day.

Interesting in the Link I gave at the start of this thread,
Is the Liverpool Map.

Liverpool to Rochdale in approximately 37.5 minutes! I doubt you could do that even as the crow flies. Again something missing from DWP knowledge base: Hills and Valleys not to mention buses and trains which are late or never actually turn up and miss connections where you are also stood still waiting and using up more time. I think maybe the colours are a giveaway. Middle of the night using Donald Campbell's Bluebird.

The planks at joke central also forget to factor in traffic flow, accidents, how many are boarding the bus etc all has an effect on journey times.

People dont only have to just 'get to work,' but also get home.So public transport needs to be accessible/reachable in an easy manner where ever ones 'working  :) '.

I also wonder if they factor in travel for people with a disability who walk slower than your average person because of a bad leg/back ect I don't know why I ask the question though because I'm sure I already know the answer...........No

I Wonder what about People in Rural Areas who, Being on Benefits cannot even think about running a Car, So IF they live in a small Village,
2 Buses a day, i in the Morning to town, and 1 in the afternoon back, Trains axed back in the 1960s What the hell do the Joke Centre expect them to do,
Walk 20 Miles, or a Taxi on Benefits.

I once lived in a small Coastal Village in the South West of England, Bus Service was "Seasonal", So if you missed the Bus in late September,The Next one was May, The Next Year.

Finnster asked: I also wonder if they factor in travel for people with a disability who walk slower than your average person because of a bad leg/back ect I

I know within the ESA/PIP mobility questions they ask how far can someone mobilise, they need to look at the TIME it takes them to cover 50 metres,

For example. A normal person will walk at a normal pace, while someone with a disability or limited action won`t. Best thing to do here is to time yourself. Measure a distance and set your stopwatch on your phone and walk that distance the way you normally would and stop the clock when you reach the end. Note the time over various days when you are not feeling pain and on days when you are. Just to show the `reliability/repeatedly and frequency` on different days. Especially if you know you can`t rush yourself or mobilise normally without experiencing pain or require extra time to complete a journey.

The main thing is, anyone out there who feels this is something they need recorded should say so. Otherwise the help won`t be there. It`s vital that everyone looks at their own circumstances and applied logic to it.

I found this, some of the video is out of date (18 jan 2015), when he talks about the UJM. However, around: 08-18 time on the video. He goes on about ‘travel to work area’.
