I haven't given the jc my email address as I don't wish to be contacted that way as I haven't got access to them 24hours a day. When I show work coaches my cv I always redact it so they can't see it.

During my last appointment which took 2 hours before they let me leave and they only did that because they were closing. My wc demanded my email so she can contact/harass me through email and she wants to see it on my cv. I'm also to remove from my cv that I do not consent to sharing my cv to third parties. She said having that statment on it is making me unemployable. Nobody has said this to me before when they've seen my cv.

If I don't give them my email address at my next appointment wc said it will refer me to a decision maker and my claim stopped and she said she doesn't care about any foi I have with me.

What will happen if I still don't give her my email address and she goes through with her threat of decision maker.
My old coach kept demanding it, but I never gave in.
Will the decision maker agree with me that I can choose how I would like to be contacted im still on jsa.

Here’s a good FOI @Catwoman, especially the part supplying the JCP with an email. Not sure if this has changed with the Univ-Credit as you need an email to get enrolled on this scheme?

“5. Is it mandatory requirement that job centre plus or workprogramme providers should have
peoples phone numbers and personal email address on their computer systems? If not can
these be requested to be removed without any fear of sanctions?

It is not mandatory for a person claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance to supply Jobcentre Plus with
an email address and home telephone number. There are currently no plans for any third
parties to be given direct access to accounts on Universal Jobmatch. “

PS: Also I had this trouble with the Roach about email address :side:

Just to add to Dude’s post

Looks like they are clutching at straws to find ways to sanction you Catwoman

What they are demanding flies in the face of Article 8 of The European Convention on Human Rights

ARTICLE 8
1. Everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence.

2. There shall be no interference by a public authority with the exercise of this right except such as is in accordance with the law and is necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security, public safety or the economic well-being of the country, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, or for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.

The following 2 links should help to answer your question.

You are not required to provide work coach with email address. I have seen no legislation that makes it mandatory. Tell them that you give it to employers that you contact about jobs and your chosen job search engines as necessary.

If they claim that fast access to you is important you might consider giving them your phone number. You need not be in when it rings, or the line might be bad if you talk to them through a cushion or up against a bus engine. Maybe you have to go answer door, see to something on the cooker and leave them hanging for 5 minutes. They would soon tire of calling.

Showing the work coach a copy of your CV just to confirm that it exists is expected. You can ensure that phone number and email address are omitted. No need to include a request not to share your CV with third parties, the law expects that the recipient doesn’t do that anyway. If it turns out that they have done that without your consent they would be committing an offence.

In past, after giving JCP an email address have set up a permanent automated 'out of office' email message like:

'<auto message>

I no longer use this email address.

I have been getting lots of spam and malware phishing attacks at this email address, so have now
created a new one.

To protect my privacy, personal data and my devices, if you need my new email address
please send a signed for delivery letter to my home address, explaining why you need my
new email address and the precise legislation that requires me to disclose it to you.'

Be cautious about sharing a mobile phone number, as text messages can be experienced more controlling than email messages.

Interesting.
Could you not post a link to an idiots guide to auto-messaging or something like that. Some of us are not as sharp on IT as we used to be on the old chalk and slate.

How to Set Up an Email Out of Office Responder
www.makeuseof.com/tag/set-email-office-responder-go-trip/
Tip: Do not include any personal info in the auto reply message
YouTube www.youtube.com/results?search_query=online+email+out+of+office+vacation+reply

Additional complaint suggestion to be sent by email:

'I wish to complain that different Work Coaches are asking me to give them my email address, without
explaining why they want it and how they intend to use, process or share it. When responding
to this complaint please ensure no Work Coach and or Jobcentre has access access to my email address and
in accord with the GDPR and the Data Protection Act (2018) I do not consent to my email address
being used/processed, by DWP, for anything else other than this complaint.'

Would create a new email address for above message. This would prove to DWP any claimant has an email address. Further ideas and complaint email addresses at

Thank you for the links. May come in handy.

If it is possible, by this means, to deny work coaches and Jobcentres access to your email address, can’t it be done by telling the work coach to his/her face?

Following your advice to be cautious with mobile phones, could the above not also apply to phones, of whatever variety?

Don`t know if this will be of any help BB. They are asking about a disabled person having a requirement to own/use a mobile phone to make a UC claim, but DWP go on to say that having a mobile is not a requirement.

Does anyone include hobbies on thier cv or their full name.

As the spelling of my name is hard to pronounce I usually just have my initial and surname. Eg C. Woman.
As per usual the wc suggested I should add full name and hobbies so I 'let people in'.
I don't think putting hobbies on a cv mean anything. Especially I like reading/music..

To your question @Catwoman upon hobbies on a CV: While on a 'soft-skills' course some fella was into an Extreme sport. And was told by the tutor/coach that he should take it off his CV. As he was told that many firms don't like staff to engage in dangerous activities, from there employee's. Then started a debate about personal freedom's when not in the workplace...

Never included hobbies on my CV, it's not essential. Also, why the hell should anyone "let people in"? They're total fecking strangers! Anyway most CVs are never read, most are scanned for "key" words. Anyway, the great unwashed shouldn't have any hobbies, we should all be looking for work every second of every day, eh...? :silly:

What will happen? Probably nothing it's a bluff.
If it does go to decision maker in your appeal make them aware of the FoI and Human Rights Act and stress that any negative repercussion such as sanction is unlawful coercion that impinges upon unalienable human rights, indemnification will be addressed in a court of law due to the DWP's illegal actions.

EDIT:
Btw, you have an absolute right to be correctly informed of your rights responsibilities and obligations at all times pertinent to your claim to job seeker's allowance.Stress your concerns and question under what law your personal private data can be obtained lacking your consent, failure to direct to relevant legislation may be treated as negligence.
